IFor best experience Get the App
Every cook can use an assistant like Range. Send remote alerts to other iPhones and iPads, anywhere, and save graphs of your recipes — all in an incredibly accurate thermometer that you can leave in your oven or grill. Just like your recipes, we made it with love and the best ingredients — US-built food-safe silicone and stainless steel. Range helps you achieve great results with less effort. Coal Range is Ember's big brother, and it's made for the pro griller. If you've gotten burned in the past by flare-ups, this is for you. Coal Range has a 3” sharp tip made to slip right into meat, whether you're roasting, barbecuing, grilling, or smoking your dinner. It's short enough to fit in your oven or grill — leave it in or use it as an instant-read thermometer. Do you know how inaccurate your oven is? Roast or grill it your way to get as tender as you like without sacrificing food safety. Make perfectly soft-boiled eggs sous-vide style. Explore the hidden world of your brews, confections and meats with the graphing view. Use Range with your iPad as a leave-in thermometer in your roast and watch the graph of temperature over time. Save the data so you can see what works and what doesn't for your recipe. Set alerts to let you know when your steak is medium rare. Or, use Range as an instant-read thermometer to spot check individual burgers on the grill. Presets for beef, pork, poultry and ground meat allow you to easily set alerts and know your dinner will turn out perfectly every time. Range has options for presets based on USDA temperature recommendations, as well as gourmet settings. Download the Range app, plug Range into your iPhone (compatible with iOS 5.1+) and you're on your way to your tastiest meal yet.

Great idea, poor execution.
Great idea, poor execution. It's little on the expensive side, but hey I like gadgets. Problem is, this failed while using it for only the second time. It's not the first one that broke either. I previously had an ember model. That stopped working too. What about support? Nope, you're on your own. I have tried contacting Supermechanical via their app, via email, and via phone. Communication is extremely sporadic, and I'm no closer to having the issue resolved.Recommendation: Avoid.UPDATE: I finally heard back from Supermechanical. Apparently they've experienced staff problems. They apologized and sent me a replacement Coal without quibbling.UPDATE 2: And it failed first time I used it! Seriously. I am so done with this now. Looking at something from Thermoworks instead.

worth every penny - app needs work
LOVE this thermometer. We get excellent cooks on meats every... single... time...The minus-one star is for the app. There are now many thermometers similar to this on the market, but what sets the Supermechanical apart is the app. The way I view it is, in that case, that app should really blow it out of the water, otherwise, I could just buy a cheaper thermometer that monitors what I'm cooking without the app.The app uses obnoxious sounds for the alerts (with no way to change, as far as I can find), and is not very intuitive. For instance, if you launch the app prior to plugging the thermometer into the headphone jack, it requires you to take a tutorial.... every time... Also, when you set a temperature, whether a preset or your own setting, it doesn't remove the other set temps. I get why maybe this needs to be in place, but much more often than not, if I am setting a different temp than the one I previously set, it is because I need a new one altogether, not because I'd like two alerts. All in all, I (we, really - husband and I) love this thing. I would definitely recommend purchasing, just know that the app takes a lot of getting used to. (note to Supermechanical - let's work on this).

Great device for calibrating ovens and monitoring your cooking
I bought this to record how out of range my top of the line Samsung Induction oven was and try to adjust it. Unfortunately the oven calibration can only be done at one temperature and this change is not uniform from 200 to 450, so 350 is perfect, 450 is to hot, and 200 to cold. When this probe is connected to an iPhone or iPad, you get an excel spreadsheet showing the change in temperature over time. When you insert the probe into what you are cooking, you can get an indication from the graph when the food should reach your desired temp.

App is unusably buggy
The app is so bad. It hangs constantly and it takes 15 minutes of poking and rotating and restaring to get it to show a temperature reading. This makes it considerably worse than an old fashioned mechanical thermometer

Great device, but broken after 18 months
I gave this to my dad for father's day, about 18 months ago. He loves it. The only problem is that, just over a year later, the cord has a short in it. He noticed that some of the wiring was frayed/exposed when wiping it down after a use, and it's functionality has decreased. He loves it, so he's asked for another one. But it seems a bit expensive for something that may have to be replaced every 1-2 years if this is a persistent problem.

No real time temperature reading on remote devices
Bought this assuming that we could actively monitor the temperature of foods while away from the grill or oven. In fact it will only send alerts to a remote device at preset temperatures which renders it pretty much useless. I guess I should have read the literature more closely.

ok meat probe and thermometer
I upgraded my oven and the fancy new model lacked the built-in probe -- which I loved -- so this was my replacement. It's ok. I plug it into my iPad and it seems to tell the temperature. But the app is a mess, hard to figure out, I can't get it to download recipes (if that's even a possibility) or to do much beyond warble at certain temperatures. But it works fine as a glorified thermometer and meat-probe.
