What is the thickness of the wood pieces?

about 1/8", once assembled it feels nice and sturdy. The kids love creating new tunes

Would the interest of this wear out quickly for a 13 going on 14 year old boy?

It is a fascinating build and may be one he returns to periodically. The tunes that can be made are akin to what a child's xylophone can play, so my guess would be no. If, however, he is interested in mechanisms, this has some interesting movements.
