Audio Post Production
Let's face it, you can have the best video in the world but if the audio is awful everyone will cringe. I bought this after reading a copy of the Author's other book Producing Great Sound for Film and Video, Third Edition (DV Expert Series) and attending a conference where he taught a session. The Author, Jay Rose, is a guru on the subject and best of all he loves to share his knowledge. The book is technical in nature and I love technical subjects. However, Jay Rose writes in a style that is easy to read. The author states that he wrote the book with students and beginners in mind. Although the book mainly focuses on post production it does cover basic audio information. For one example, there is a discussion of what digital means versus analog. Although I studied video and audio production in college, I believe anyone could learn a lot from this book with no background in audio. The book includes a CD with clips so that you get a greater understanding of the material. After reading the book you will have the knowledge it takes to fix many goofs made during production and you will be wise so that you don't make them again. The book is not software or computer platform specific and you will learn editing techniques that will help you no matter what you use in the future. I recommend this book for anyone wanting to understand audio, editing audio, and to have better productions.

Awesome Follow Up to "Producing Great Sound for Film and Video"
In this book, Jay Rose does an excellent and thorough job of describing Post Production considerations and workflow to prepare audio for Film and Video. What I like about Jay's writing style, is that he really is mentoring the reader. The reader gets the feeling that Jay wants you to understand the workflow and why certain tools and work flow approaches are more appropriate for a given situation. A CD with pre and post processed audio is provided with the book. If you really want to get the most out of Jay's books, you will work along through the exercises on the CD using your DAW. He will start with a problem clip and go on to process it in several different forms. If you can work through and eventually duplicate his processing techniques and resulting sound, you will come away with an excellent understanding and feel for the concepts he describes. This book is really the second in a series of two. You should really start with "Producing Great Sound for Film and Video", also by Jay Rose and follow on with this book. Both books are now on my shelf as serious references and highly recommend working through both of them. Each book contains an audio CD as well.

Incredibly Readable, Immediately Useful
The first thing you realize as you read Jay Rose's Audio Postproduction for Film and Video is that the man knows his stuff. From the right monitoring set-up to the math behind good equalization, the book simply oozes authority that comes from a lot of miles in the studio. But since writing about audio is like dancing about architecture (thanks Martin Mull), knowledge alone won't make a useful book on sound. Thankfully, Mr. Rose excels in making sometimes baffling concepts -- like stereo simulation and different types of compression -- easy to understand for filmmakers who may not have had the best grades in math & science.Perhaps the most useful feature of the book are the "cookbooks" included in nearly each chapter. Here, Mr. Rose gives you settings and step-by-step instructions that you can use right away on your own audio. The cookbooks are software-agnostic, so basically it doesn't matter if you're using ProTools, SoundForge or WhatHaveYou. They give you the basic recipe to get your sounds closer to where they need to be, and then you can tweak it from there. He also includes lots of "gotchas" and a CD full of examples where you can hear for yourself the concepts he's laid out in the book.If you want to know how to make your audio as good as your picture, pick up this book!

Incredible learning tool.
I recently started a "Sound for Picture" course, the class has no text book, but my instructor recommended this book to me. I am extremely satisfied. I also got " Producing Great Sound for Film and Video, Third Edition (DV Expert Series) " and wish that I had that book when I had taken my video production class. I'm recommending both of these books to all of my fellow students.I do wish that the kindle version came with a download of the CD. Other training books I've gotten from Apple, Avid, Adobe, and even other books from Focal Press have had some method to download the Audio CD or additional content. I'm certain it would amount to a unique random code generated and published into the electronic version. Couple that to a website allowing the purchaser to download the Audio CD with a valid code. Amazon could support this easily, or the publishing house. The books are incredible even without the CD however. Jay Rose has a firm grasp on the science of sound and explains it easily and simply. If there were a means to get the CD downloaded then I would give these books a sixth star.

A great introduction
This book is a really good introduction to the topic. It is more specific than most books on audio that I have read. For example: "Put voices in the next room with a low shelf around 500 hz/-24 db, a resonant peak around 1.3 khz/+12db/ q=5, and a high shelf at 2 khz/-24db..." Now that is SPECIFIC! Most books I have read, while useful, generally say something like: "Cut the lows, mess around with a boost somewhere in the middle, and cut the highs" in stead. The whole book is like this with really specific and useful information. It is one of the best audio books I have read.It might be a tad advanced if you have no experience with eq's and compressors etc. However i don't feel that it is above anyone's head if they are willing to put in the time to learn. A lot of the information is useful and not just for video post. Anyone interested in audio for video games, video, voice overs, etc. will benefit from this book.

Excellent resource
If you already have the author's other textbook, "Producing Great Sound," you may not need this one as there's quite a bit of crossover. But there's a lot more detail on post-production in this book, especially on EQ and effects. It was published in 2009, so some of the software-specific discussions are out of date, but most of the advice is timeless and still relevant.

Very useful, clear and motivating
I'm beginner in sound production and at the moment I'm working on small film. I bought the book as basic knowledge source. It is written in very good English, and is very simple and not boring at the same time. There are many appropriate hints, related to the chapters text, and they are placed very smart: Always come at the right time, when you're ready to get the information. All terms and concepts are simply explained and good referred from different chapters.I also use the book as motivation to work further on my current project. Works very well :)Love it.
