Sony SLV-D380P DVD/VCR Tunerless Progressive Scan DVD/VHS Combo Player (2009 Model), Black

I know most people use TiVo's nowadays, but I'm a little tech slow, own 4 other DVD/VCR combos, and like to have physical discs I can see & have in case it gets to the point that I can't afford cable in all rooms anymore. I mainly use the others to record multiple TV shows aired at the same time. This one is connected to my primary large TV to watch what I've recorded on the others either on DVD or VCR, or watch DVD's from Netflicks. I also use it connected to another VCR to edit out the commercials and then dub that tape to permanent DVD ( for shows like American Idol & SYTYCD ) on a combo that's a DVR. It periodically needs cleaning to help with tracking, but otherwise, it's working great. Now watch, since I've said that, it will start having problems. I hope not, and that with proper care will last as long as my old Toshiba, which still records and plays back tapes but the DVD player stopped working several years ago. The remote is a little hard to use if you have larger fingers, but most functions work from a universal remote, which generally have larger buttons. You still need to keep the remote handy, though, to switch back from DVD to VCR mode, if you can't find a button to do that on your universal remote.

I have a continuing need for VCRs because I have a large condo and many areas in which to view tapes. I don't use the DVD function because my DVD recorders use RAM discs, but so what? For $79, the DVD drive can sit there empty. This Sony plays 19 micron tapes recorded on my Sharps, JVCs and other Sonys exceptionally well. As I have made a point of buying only 19 micron VCRs, I can't attest to other types of recordings. This is what you do: Attach it to any AV input directly to your TV, and use it only as a player. There is no coaxial connection, so you have to have an unused AV input. If you have a malfunctioning VCR, don't throw it away. Piggyback this Sony into the front or rear AV inputs, and use this Sony's recording capacity and the old VCR's tuner. Eventually, I will go all DVD, but I need to wait for the prices to come down, and for my other units to die a natural death. It took awhile for me to figure all this out. I hope it helps others make an appropriate and helpful purchase. I am contemplating buying another one while I can, and reserve it for later in this time of expensive electronic change.

Ease of use - Easy, hook up and go. One thing I like is that the remote control uses a switch rather than logic buttoms so you know from across the room whether you are trying to control a vcr or dvd. The operations of the rest of the remote controls could be clearer. A big problem I have is that the remote has a LOT of plain buttons that all look they same. In a dim room I usually hand to to somebody else to fast-forward, etc. Features - exactly what is advertised and expected. No frills. Picture Quality - Haven't used it on a discriminating system but it looks ok to me. Sound Quality - Haven't used it on a discriminating system but it sounds ok to me. I use my machines as basic players. Seems like I remember the manual on this one being a little vague. I purchased this product. It was used, but looked to be in good condition when I received it. I hooked it up and played both dvd's & vcr tapes, and it worked fine. However, after using it for 2 weeks, I couldn't get the dvd door to open. I had to force it open to get my dvd back. I immediately boxed it back up and returned it for a refund. The seller only gave me a partial refund. They charged me a $42 "restocking fee", even though their player was defective. They didn't even offer to replace it. I filed a complaint against them, & they are refusing to give me the rest of my money. I'm going to have to call Amazon and make them force these guys to give me the rest of my money. DON'T BUY FROM THESE GUYS UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE RIPPED OFF!

I got this to replace my old dvd vcr combo. I wanted the multi read dvd player for my home made dvd's. As an added bonus it also reads jpeg disks. As to all the negative reviews, I read all of them found them to be without merit. Every complaint was that the vcr had no tuner. I have a satellite box and if I wish to tape programs I use the satellite to do so. However I have no need for this as I have a dvr with my satellite service. To those who objected to the absense of a tuner, why would you purchase this product not knowing what that meant? Besides, in 2009 when the broadcasters switch to digital, everyone will need a separate digital tuner anyway.

This DVD/VHS player works great and enables me to use less space since it plays both in the same device. Remote and manual are easy to use. Instructions make sense. Sony is a great brand.

We bought this product because it was a DVD/VCR Combo. We have a lot of VHS movies we like & wanted to watch them so we bought this product. BIG MISTAKE! We only used the VCR a few times & then could not use it. It did not work right. The picture would pause every few frames. As of now, we still can't watch anything on it. If I had wanted just for DVD's, I could have just gone to Walmart & gotten a brand new DVD Player but we also wanted a VCR which you cannot buy in any store I know of. That's the only reason I bought this product was for the VCR & got cheated on that. I will never buy anything from that company again. We don't even like the DVD on this product We are not satisfied with this product at all.

Not too costly, and the top-rated Sony brand. Super easy to set up with a modern TV. Occasionally ejects the DVD when I turn it on, so it loses my place in the movie, so I don't power it down. No other problems, and I've been using it frequently every day for 7 years. Review updated 5-4-25
