I Like the Ability to Buy an Issue Any Time
For several years I was in Japan a lot. I miss it. I appreciate that I can buy a daily version for a very reasonable price any time I like.

Download was quick and easy. Good to get updates from Japan every now and then since many of the items do not appear in US papers.

1936 the monarchists overturned type trays vs. 2014 Asahi retracting decades of Comfort Women coverage per the Japanese govt.
However "lefty" this paper may be, I still consider it essentially Japanese and therefore anti-Chinese. I find it very creepy that Asahi reported on Bo GuaGua's favorite restaurant in Boston in a series entitled "Red Aristocrats" while putting forth puff pieces about Akihito's family. Google it before they take it down. The paper is pro-monarchist in a very sneaky Haruki Murakami way - review their articles by Genichiro Takahashi.Always remember the utter bullshi+ of this:"[T]here were moves to reject Masako's career [as a diplomat] and her character," he complained to stunned journalists gathered at his Togu Detached Palace in Tokyo. His heart-felt words immediately ignited debate. For Naruhito spoke as an aggrieved husband, defending his partner's right to freedom and dignity under the postwar constitution. Never before in public had that been done. Could the bureaucrats really have lost control of the Crown Prince's image?and they WANT this remark (DIPLOMATIC CAREER _ get it?) to be remembered because there is a link to his remarks on their official website - doesn't sound like anyone is CENSORING them or otherwise bullying them or restricting them AT ALL:The full text of Prince Naruhito's remarks can be found on the Imperial Household Agency's Web site at: http://www.kunaicho.go.jp/press-crown/prince2004-0510.html. The cast of characters behind the Imperial Moat and their proper titles can be found at: http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Imperial_Household_of_Japan

Asahi Simbun
The paper offers a wonderful window into Japanese life. The news stories have an almost poetic balance between the larger issues and stories of individual lives that are effected by them. By reading this paper, I have an increased understanding of what is important to Japanese people; their news and culture. My favourite section is Vox Populi, which is always a really well written editorial on current events (that usually ties in with the deeper history or culture of Japan). Every so often there is a Haiku feature in the paper which is always an engaging read. And, although I usually skip the business section, there are occasionally really interesting titbits in there about new inventions. The e-version of the Asahi Shimbun is a very enjoyable read. The translation into English is great. Even though they occasionally choose some more erudite words than most English speakers are use to, the word chosen is usually more precise.I would recommend this paper to anyone with an interest in Japan. It is also surprisingly useful for teaching ESL to Japanese students who are overseas.

Irresponsible handling for incorrect news articles
Even if Asahi shimbun admitted that they have reported incorrect news articles on so-called "comfort women" in Japanese version of Asahi, they still didn't report it in the international version as far as I read. And they still neither apologize or take any responsibilities for their incorrect news articles which caused much troubles to Japan and Japanese. When Asahi created fake news articles by damaging coral reef by themself in 1989, they at least took responsibility for the fake report by firing culprit employee. So I can't trust this news paper.

Great Overview of Japanese News
I have been reading this newspaper for some months now, as my daughters are studying in Japan and I want to keep up with Japanese current affairs. The Asahi Shimbun is well translated and has a good range of articles, from politics to culture. It gives a concise overview of the current interests and concerns of Japan today.
