Best peeler ever, the julienne blade is the best bonus feature ever!
The last time I waxed poetic about a household item was my Dyson Animal a few years back, my husband thought I was insane. Today I got my BearHandz peeler/julienne tool. I bought it because I needed a new peeler, this one looked the sturdiest and I thought the julienne blade was just a novelty add-on.First, it is absolutely the best peeler I have ever owned. Really, no kidding. I peeled veg for canning and pickling in record time and with virtually no waste because it peeled so thinly. Then I figured I might as well check out the julienne thing. I've seen them advertised and was never interested because it seemed like something I would never use, but as long as it's here... OMG!!! It's so fun! We had shredded veg salad tonight and it was a total hit! I think we're having hash browns tomorrow night, and maybe veg bird's nest tempura on Sunday! The one piece of advice I would give is to make sure hard veg, like carrots, parsnips, etc., are really stable when you're shredding so you get nice uniform shreds. I put them on the cutting board and stuck a fork in the 'greens' end to keep the carrot stable, then shredded away.To save yourself having to run to the grocery store once your peeler arrives and you only had one carrot to peel and julienne, stock up on shredding veg ahead of time :)

Be careful if you want to julienne peel vegetables
The julienne peeler function was very difficult for me to use. I wanted to use it primarily to julienne carrots and gobo (burdock root). It was tiresome to use it on just one carrot and it was even harder to use on gobo. You have to grip both the carrot and the peeler while also pressing down hard with the peeler, with each stroke. Often times the carrot would break off before the julienned slices were completely ejected from the blades and I would have to pull it out backwards. The julienne blade part of the peeler was very hard to keep clean and if you did not clean it with a fine brush soon after using, little bits of vegetable fiber would dry between the blades and make it much harder to use the next time. It got to the point that I had to return it. I purchased the Swissmar V-2053 Borner Power Line Thin Julienne Slicer and am much happier now. This allows me to julienne multiple carrots with ease.I am really confused as to how this peeler had earned such a high rating, yet did not work out for me at all. Maybe my peeler was defective.

I am unhappy with my purchase.
The blade is perpendicular to the handle. That fact has really slowed me down and made peeling more dangerous. The last peeler I had, for years, had a blade that lined up with the handle so it was like an extension of your hand. This setup feels awkward in comparison. Also, one has less control over the cut and I feel vulnerable to getting cut myself. You see, you press against the potato without a pivot point in the one hand. This slows down the entire process. It doesn't feel safe or accurate. It also takes off more potato than my last peeler and leaves a ribbed surface that would definitely not be good if you were going to store the vegetable for any amount of time. Great breeding ground for bacteria.

Where to put my thumb?
It functions well but you can't get any leverage cause you can't put your thumb on the top backside. I just don't know how you're supposed to keep it sturdy without that.

Great sharp peeler.
I really like this peeler - it is quick and sharp and was priced well. The only reasons for the 4 stars: be careful because of the sharpness, until I got use to it I caught my hand with it but now I'm more cautious. Also, it can be difficult to get the stray peels out - I've found that swishing firmly in hot sudsy water does the trick.

Heavy-duty construction
This is a beautifully constructed peeler which works efficiently and precisely. It has a "weightier" feel when handling because of the solid materials used (no plastic or cheap metal). Also, it leaves a rough surface to vegetables rather than smooth as I am used to. It doesn't affect, at all, the final product once cooked. For fresh veggies, just know the texture appears more rough, but most people would never notice. this peeler should last a very long time due to the stainless steel and thoughtful construction of this tool.

Great device
The peeler got here super quick which is always a good start, so no fuss there. Nice and clean looking and fits nicely in your hand, weighted just about right. Makes really easy work of peeling carrots and potatoes, you can get loads done quickly with this. Rinses out well, so you don't get a build up of starch around the edges. All in all a good piece of kit for your kitchen utensil draw! Definitely recommend.

Does nothing well
As a peeler it is awkward to use, since you cannot hold it at 90 degrees to what you're peeling, and the sharp julienne side faces upwards and is likely to cut you. If you want to make julienne anything, get a mandoline and some cut-proof gloves. The BearHandz worked acceptably on a carrot until it clogged up, but was hopeless with anything more difficult such as ginger root. Unlike a mandoline it cannot be disassembled for cleaning, and it's very difficult to get jammed-in pieces out from between the tightly-spaced blades.
