Why do brakes need to be replaced in the first place?

Friction material on the brake pad contacts the rotors to slow the vehicle. In time, that material wears away and the pads must be replaced. Sometimes the rotors and calipers must also be replaced.

What’s the squealing sound I hear when braking?

Over time, wear indicators in brake pads may contact the rotors’ surface when braking, resulting in a metallic squealing sound. Vehicles equipped with wear sensors may also provide an alert that minimum brake pad thickness has been reached.

What if it’s more of a grinding sound?

If all the friction material has been worn away, the metal backing plate of the brake pad will be the material in contact with the rotor during braking. It causes a grinding sound and braking performance is often diminished.

Why do the brakes seem to pulsate when stopping?

It may be due to worn brake pads, unevenly worn rotors or unevenly worn tires. Have the pulsation diagnosed as soon as possible to avoid the possibility of greater brake system wear or damage.

What about vibrations or shaking in the steering wheel?

This is more serious than pulsation. If the brakes are very worn or the rotors are unevenly worn, there can be a significant vibration or shaking in the steering wheel when braking. It may mean brake service is needed immediately.

As you can see in this pic, brakes like new but prior owner didn’t change brake cylinders nor springs… was going to get chi-com brand from local auto parts chain store for 3x price, but got two from Amazon genuine OEM. Saved enough money to pay for a night at overpriced bed and breakfast with honey. Highly considering purchasing two more just to board- but to be honest if I ever have to change again I’ll convert to discs. Pro-tip (cuz I’m old and have been into DIY and shop work - every time you change pad or rotors (or in my case brake cylinders) do your best to passively flush ALL cylinders and master until all fluid is clean… dirty brake fluid means water has gotten into your system. Brake fluid is hydroscopic-meaning its soul mate is H20… and dirty fluid is caused by the water breaking down the fluid…. that advise is free 😇.
