Black Gold

This is the first book I read that made me cry. I'm now in my mind seventy and although I didn't cry I really enjoyed the book again. It's a story that is good for all ages. Enjoy it.

My daughter has adored this series. Even as a teen, she still picks them back up for a fun read.

It is difficult to really know how much of this story of a real horse is real, but I put that out of my mind and just enjoyed Marguerite Henry's writing style, and Wesley Dennis' pen-and-ink drawings. It begins with a mare named U-See-It and her breeding to Black Tomey to produce a black colt with a white marking on his forehead the Osage Indian woman named Black Gold, for the black gold of Oklahoma. A young boy named Jaydee who wants to be a jockey enters the picture and we watch both colt and child grow up, one to be a racehorse and one to be his jockey. So much fun to read, it makes me forget the sad ending, but you dwell on the determination and courage of Black Gold in his last race to help ease the pain. Young and old should enjoy this coming-of-age classic and thrill to the world of horse racing, and the love between a boy and his mount.

I had read this book lovingly and repeatedly as a child.Marguerite Henry is a wonderful writer, pulling you into the story with her eloquence, as well as the charming, intricate drawings done by.... Roy? I'm not quite sure!As usual, most of her inspiration is based in reality, bringing to life the history of the horse.This is the story of "Black Gold", an influential racehorse with a strong heart. It chronicles his story from before birth to his incredible racing career.You really get to know the characters intrinsic to his life.I do love the depth of her writings, making for good reading by children and grownup children as well!

Story is based on fact. Beautifully written about a horse that ran on heart.

I love this storyn. It is sad because Black Gold dies, but it also tells the story of a brave little stallion who became a Derby winner.
