About 150 years ago, these Northwest wine pioneers were garnering fame and awards until prohibition brought Idaho’s wine production to a screeching halt. Rebuilding that legacy from the 1970s on, Idaho has reemerged as a distinctive wine region capturing national attention. In 1975, Ste. Chapelle brought new luster to Idaho winemaking, with a commitment to fine winemaking using grapes planted among the sweeping orchards of southwestern Idaho in the Snake River Valley AVA. It has grown to become the largest winery in Idaho and a hometown favorite that outsells all others in volume. Idaho native Maurine Johnson is dedicated to the quality and success of Ste. Chapelle wines. This success starts in the vineyards, where the unique combination of geography, climate and soils produces grapes with great structure and balance and outstanding varietal character. With the assistance of a dedicated, tenured production team, Maurine strives to create expressive, approachable wines that continue to entice consumers to discover Idaho tradition. "The elevation, volcanic soil, and proximity to the Snake River provide us some of the best conditions for growing premium wine grapes and outstanding wines." -WINEMAKER MAURINE JOHNSON

Among the best lower-alcohol, mildly-sweet reds
I agree with the first reviewer on this, especially. If you're going for the opposite of a wine that stands out for its critic-pleasing singe of high alcohol content, and instead prefer a softer, smoother experience, it is hard to beat this Ste. Chapelle Soft Red from Idaho. With its frequent lack of availability, I have certainly tried to find something else to beat it with a similar mix of quality, tasting impressions, and price, but other stand-ins just haven't quite cut it. I keep looking to see if this one is available again instead.
