The Ukulele YL/BK Mello-Yello Adventure Travel Ukulele is a soprano-sized instrument designed for both beginners and seasoned players. Its all-ABS plastic construction and stainless steel geared tuners ensure water resistance and durability, while the large offset sound hole and deep body enhance tone and projection. The BugsGear has the best action (string height) of them all
I own 6 plastic Ukes: The Outdoor Uke, Woodi, Makala Waterman, Makala Dolphin. The BugsGear has the best action (string height) of them all. It feels great to hold and is comfortable to play. It looks like no other Uke out there and in short, has a very mellow sound for a plastic instrument. I like it a lot but the tuners are a little sloppy, not the best quality. The gig bag is a very nice addition and not some burlap sack with a logo on it. Like all my other plastics Ukes, this one has a permanent place in my rotation and is loads of fun to strum. Kudos for the unique and easy string slots on the bridge. The colors are also awesome.

I am going to be backpacking around Asia for three months so I need a sturdy ukulele that I can stuff into a 50-liter rucksack .
CANNOT AFFORD KOA WOOD? TRY PLASTIC.Aloha! I purchased this particular ukulele for two reason: First, I am an absolute beginner with no musical experience of any kind. I need a quality instrument with which to learn, but I cannot afford a Hawaiian-made koa wood ukulele. The second reason is a practical one. I am going to be backpacking around Asia for three months so I need a sturdy ukulele that I can stuff into a 50-liter rucksack and play on the white, sandy beaches of Thailand. I'm happy to report that I'm pleased with my purchase. Since the instrument is made of plastic, I can take it to the beach and practice my strum while wading in the foamy surf. I can even leave the uke in the trunk of my car and it will not warp or crack. (That is what would happen to an ordinary wooden uke.) I've been practicing with my BugsGear uke since February and I already know four basic songs by heart. Since the uke comes with a carrying bag, I've been able to take it on my afternoon walks at Ala Moana Beach Park. Learning on this uke is fun and I feel like I'm giving my brain some exercise.SO HOW DOES IT SOUND?Today I showed off my uke to a friend who plays with a koa wood ukulele. Her instrument is breathtaking. She paid about $350 for it. Even though I'm a novice, I know her ukulele sounds way more beautiful. It was a joy to strum it. Having said that, the BugsGear sounds pretty good for a plastic guitar. My friend tells me it's a hundred times better than the plastic ukes that are sold in Waikiki souvenir shops. In other words, the BugsGear uke is not a toy. Yes, it's plastic, but it's a great uke for someone who is serious about learning how to play. I would buy this again. I give this product four stars. Mahalo for reading my review!

u get what u pay for
I just received my uke today and the shipping was as promised but the product not so good. the quality is poor. on one side the plastic did not fuse so theres a little gap about 2 inches long. I would exchange it but since I bought it as a xmas gift theres not much time so im gonna try to seal it somehow.

Waste of money
Do not buy this product! Plastic is not a suitable material for this instrument. String tension causes the neck to bend upward, causing the distance between strings and fret-board to increase beyond playablity -- even at the first fret. It's like an archery bow. The plastic body has nice resonant qualities, but the plastic neck and headstock make this product useless as a real musical instrument. I might add that my requests for a refund have been unanswered from both the manufacturer and the vendor.

All Purpose, Knock-Around and Abuse Instrument
Polycarbonate Uke-man, here. In my obsessed seeking for a decent sounding uke that can absorb the rigors of travel, hot sand and salt water, I will soon possess four plastic ukes. One is being mailed from the manufacturer in a couple of days. My Cobalt Blue (Bayou) soprano Bugs Gear uke has been in my possession for a couple of months, and it is my "first string for everything" uke. The action on this uke is better than any of my fragile wood ukes. It is not what you might call, "bright." But, I don't like bright anyway, the BG is mellower. Yes, polycarb has a tendency to dampen sounds and therein is the trade off from thinly veneered wood ukes.I barre chord nearly every chord I play (a habit I picked-up from a Hawaiian buddy), I sometimes use the "F" form at the fifth fret for an "A". On the BG soprano it sounds better to play the "A" barred than open. That tells me that there is consistency up and down the fretboard. We shall see what number four polycarb uke brings when it is delivered, for now the BG soprano is the go-to.I am an old codger and to me the uke is an instrument to be played in playful circumstances and not in a concert hall. If you want to listen to "beautiful music" on a string instrument, get a Segovia recording. No disrespect Jake Shimabukuro, but that little four-string instrument is for playing simple chords on the beach in the moonlight and singing silly songs.

Keep looking.
May be able to get a better quality for the price.

I'm happy that this is nearly indestructible
I'm happy that this is nearly indestructible. Taking it on a retreat weekend in a few days and it is forecast to rain all weekend. I am sure it is going to get wet.The strings that came with it, though. T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E. I replaced them with M600s from my local Guitar Center and it now can hold a tune for more than 5 minutes.Compared to the other Uke I purchased, this thing is very quiet. But it is still usable and will serve me well in situations where I wouldn't bring my fragile wood Ukelele like the beach, a rainy outdoor retreat weekend, backpacking, etc :).Overall I highly recommend it for its durability -- but even to my untrained ear I can tell it is near the bottom of the barrel for acoustics.
