I just got the one I ordered for a Christmas present to my brother and the head is loose and sliding up and down the handle ... What should I do ?

It's true that tomahawk heads are made to slide up and down the handle more or less freely. It's also true that the stupid little set screw is only good for tearing up the wooden handle; doesn't actually do much to keep the head on. I was not a big fan of this design "feature", so on all my hawks (I have 4 of various lengths, all made out of the 22" trailhawk. I drilled the set screw hole out to 3/8", going all the way through the wooden handle, and clear through the other side of the axe head. I then made a slightly over-size round dowel out of hickory, drove it in with a rubber mallet, and glued it with super-thin (extra low viscosity) superglue. Make sure that you get the head seated perfectly straight and where you want it, before drilling the hole.

Why is it advertised Cold Steel but comes with an 'American Tomahawk Company' sticker on the blade?

The American Tomahawk Company is owned by Cold Steel and both company's have the same CEO - Lynn Thompson.

Is this too heavy for backpacking? Which hawk is best for backpacking?

I’d say the trail hawk would be the better one for backpacking it’s lighter and still has a lot of the same versatility as the riflemans hawk

Is there a diffrent brand offering a leather sheath that fits?

Not that I have seen. If you look around you can probably grind a custom maker or look in YouTube for instructions on making your own. It’s not too hard and would only require a couple of inexpensive tools. You could get the leather and tools on Amazon or eBay.
