Brian (Mark Ruffalo) and Paulie (Academy Award® nominee Ethan Hawke, Best Actor In a Supporting Role for Training Day, 2001) are two lifelong friends who grew up like brothers on the gritty streets of south Boston. They started early as street thugs living by the criminal code, doing petty crimes and misdemeanors that grew increasingly more serious. Eventually they fall under the sway of organized crime boss Pat Kelly (Brian Goodman). As Brian becomes increasingly lost in a haze of drugs and 'jobs,' he consistently disappoints his loyal wife (Amanda Peet) and their two sons. Torn between the desire to be a good husband and the lure of easy money, Brian must make the hardest choice of his life.

Escaping the Crime Ridden Ways of the Old Hood
Two longtime tight friends work their South Boston neighborhood with shake downs, rip-offs of local businesses, partnering with drug dealers, robbing delivery trucks and occasionally taking an armored car or two as a means of supporting their go-nowhere lifestyles; a seedy existence of drinking, free-basing and casual sexual encounters with various women, we witness a change in course, at least for one of the friends. The first ten minutes of the movie were extremely violent with several graphic crimes depicted...I seriously considered turning it off as I wasn't really up for another meaningless violence-filled movie. Glad I didn't as halfway through....the trajectory of the film begins to change and we see a deepening of character in the friends particularly in one after some forced time of introspection. Half expecting something like "Good Fellows," the story's ending will surprise you, possibly inspire you. Based on a true story...this film is well worth the watch!

Decent Movie But......
Am I the only one that noticed the only season over a period of years was winter? In one scene there is snow, in the next, none, then more snow, then no snow. They leave a place in the city, snow, get to another place in the city, no snow. Saw this over a dozen times. Also, 5 years supposedly went by when they were in prison. Before 5 years, snow, after 5 years, same snow and no one has aged one month but the kids are all grown up!

A very well-done movie, great story
Ah, Mark Ruffalo, you are extraordinary in this movie! Ethan Hawke balances perfectly Mark's character. One cannot do without the other. Exceptional actors! Amanda Peet, you are a force, every single time. Great cast for all other actors, compelling story...tough, emotional, filled with lots of action. A ..cardio roller coaster. Thank you, ALL, for making possible this movie. Brian Goodman and Mark Ruffalo as directors - bravo!!!

Brought back great memories!
As a retired Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor, this movie brought back memories of many of my patients who struggled to stay clean "one day at a time." The family is also impacted for better or worse. The actors were superb. Brian's character and the fight for his soul, his family, and his dignity showed that is "worth it." Five stars!

Hawke and Ruffalo shine
This is a good story about how the power to provide for your children with a good support system. Although Hawke makes the decisions he does, it is evident (especially in the prison) that although he leads a life of crime, he truly cares fr his friend. I was also taken with 'the talk' he had with the young girl. Ruffalo....you can't help but to cheer him on and hope he chooses 'correctly'. I liked both characters!

We enjoyed it but had to use the closed captions.
I don’t think anyone in this movie spoke without mumbling and it was impossible to follow the dialog without the closed captions. There’s nothing new in this one except for an ending that wasn’t a cliché’. Hawke is a disturbing guy in the first place but he’s especially so in this one to the point he kind of creeps us out. Not much happens and we didn’t really care about either of the two friends, what they did and where they were headed because it normally doesn’t turn out well for the local boys gone bad idea that most often ends with prison or death.

Southie knuckleheads
Two lifelong friends pull jobs and get addicted to drugs which fuel their insanity. Hawk and Ruffalo are pretty good here. The story is simple, as is the message, crime doesn't pay long term. They work for a local crime boss but want to strike out on their which begins a downward spiral that is exceedingly ugly. Good film, recommended.

Good movie - seemed like a rip-off of "The Town", but I found out this came first
There is a real argument to be made that the Ben Affleck movie "The Town" lifted its entire premise from this movie. That being said, this very good. Hawke and Ruffalo are tough thugs but still very loyal to each other, and likable to the viewer. In the end its a good morality tale about recognizing what's really important.

Definitely worth watching.
I figured that with 2 of my favourite actors on board in Ethan Hawke and Mark Ruffalo, this would be a safe bet. I didn't realise that it was a true story, sometimes those movies work and quite often they don't. Mark Ruffalo has the meatier part, he has more to worry about than Hawke's character, basically he has a family and Hawke doesn't.The whole thing is really held up completely by the 2 guys, and the end is more uplifting than I expected, I was really expecting something pretty bleak, so I was pleasantly surprised and found it a satisfying story. The fact that it is a true story makes the positive ending (no spoiler don't worry) all the sweeter.

Super bargain for a very decent film
A slow burning crime drama but by no means a bad one. This is a good film, but whats makes it different from other similar movies it's it's no fuss straight to the poin,t with all the main characters putting in top performances. You would pay more for a standard z grade normal dvd than i did for this blu-ray so i wouldn't have complained if it was rubbish but the fact this film is solid makes it a great purchase at a silly price - 3.5/5
