Recommended by Cleveland Clinic neurologist...
My husband is in the early stages of Parkinson's Disease. His neurologist suggested that he begin these exercises & also that he begin riding an exercise bike, set on no resistance, for 80-90 RPM, for at least 15 minutes, 6 days a week (this is an exciting study that is proving to help relieve some PD patients' symptoms)Not knowing if there was a difference between the book & the dvd, we purchased both Delay the Disease -Exercise and Parkinson's Disease & Delay the Disease Exercise and Parkinson's Disease DVD . My husband has since learned that he didn't need the DVD. The book's photos and instructions are clear enough for him to understand. If you'd rather watch & exercise along, the DVD is the best choice for you.The book is spiral bound and lays flat; you can easily see the photos & read the instructions as you exercise. The DVD is nice because the exercises are performed outside. You can follow along with David Zid, a professional fitness instructor. When David Zid researched exercise & PD, he found only a few basic exercises had been designed for the PD patient. He knew that he could help PD patients and developed this exercise plan.Exercise OptionsThis book is broken down into several sections. I'll try to summarize:Wake Up Call, Walking & Balance Drills, Cardiovascular Exercise, Strength Training --Workout with weights, Non-weight (Core) Days--. Facial & Voice Exercises, Night Time Stretching. The exercises are broken down into levels of difficulty:~~~Level A - performed in a seated position, the basic exercise which everyone should be able to accomplish no matter their PD severity.~~~Level B - tougher than A. More balance & stability is needed; some exercises may be performed in the standing position if applicable to your level.~~~Level C - is the hardest. Good balance, stability, and hand mobility are needed. The morning and evening exercises take about 15 minutes each. The other exercises take 45 min to an hour for my husband to complete.Because my husband is in the early stages of PD, he's not sure how much the exercises are helping him, but he knows it can't hurt. PD is progressive, but can be greatly improved with an exercise routine. You can find more information and a 'Fit Tip of the Month' at the website delaythedisease dot com.

Disease Control
My husband's doctor at the Mayo clinic suggested that we get this book. We did and my husband and I do exercises from this book on a daily basis. Even though my husband goes to Physical Therapy for his disease, the doctor says that 30 minutes of daily exercise is what he needs to delay the progression of his Parkinsons. Since we have a pool in our subdivision, my husband goes there most evenings and walks in the pool. The doctor says that one mile in the pool is equivalent to 3 miles on land and it is obviously much easier on the back. We would highly recommend this book to everyone suffering from Parkinsons.

Exercise is all important to Delay Progress of Parkinson's
I used a few of these exercises in my Parkinson's exercise class. The important thing for people with Parkinson's is to keep exercising. Find what works for you. If you need ideas of what is safe or appropriate, it does help provide a guide. Having the input of a doc that has Parkinson's provides further insight. I am a support group leader as well as an Advanced Health and Fitness Specialist who works with people who have Parkinson's.

Focus on those exercises
Purchased with PD Parkinson's Disease For Dummies (For Dummies (Health & Fitness)) which provides a wide range of information about PD and includes an excellent illustrated chapter on diet and exercise.I like that [[ASIN:1424332087 Delay the Disease -Exercise and Parkinson's Disease is a spiral book with diagrams. Guidance is provided to help design a weekly schedule. Exercises are grouped by degree of difficulty and tabs allow speedy reference to them while you are working out.Dummies is my reference tool but this book is used every day. I envision tossing this into my suitcase when travelling to ensure I do my exercises.

Delay the disease - exercise and Parkinsons disese
I am finding this book useful as an exercise aid to keep my body more flexible and to avoid some of the stiffness which comes with PD. I have not attempted all exercises yet - but am working on it. I have found exercise also helps to feel less depressed and more positive. Robyne Waller Delay the Disease -Exercise and Parkinson's Disease

Delay the Disease
We were very happy to see that David Zid is right here in Columbus, OH. WE took the book on vacation and it was a great help for my husband to remember what he needed to do and when. We think the pictures are very helpful when trying to do the exercises. We already were aware of how important it is to exercise if you are diagnosed with PD. This book is easy to follow, explains moves and also the facial expressions are very important.

One of the most helpful resources
Delay the Disease is one of the most helpful resources I have found for PD sufferers. The exercises are well illustrated and organized by level of difficulty. One of the more interesting sections focuses on exercises to do before going to bed. Somehow exercising before turning in for the night never crossed my mind. But, now that I've added that to my regimen, I do sleep better. This book is right on task. Add it to your library.

A good supplement for Zid's DVD.
Good book, but if you buy his DVD, you won't need the book. Easier to do the excellent exercises with the DVD and nice if them.Did is an excellent instructor.
