Empowering Education of Lupus
Appreciated the information clearly written in this book. Wish I had met this doctor thirty years ago when my condition was dismissed as being depression. A very thorough, a must read.

Great resource
As someone who was diagnosed with lupus almost 40 years ago, it was very interesting to read this book. It is both comprehensive and easy to understand. You don't need to read the chapters in order, but can look up certain aspects of lupus that interest you, or that may affect you personally, by skimming through the table of contents and going from there.I have already learned a few things that I have never heard about from my rheumatologist or from my own research. I bought a used copy, but it was in great shape and arrived quickly. I do look forward to reading through the entire book eventually, but for now I'm happy to have this great resource to refer to which isn't a doom and gloom book about lupus, (which was all that was available 40 years ago.)

Outstanding and comprehensive
If you have been recently diagnosed or a loved one, this is a great starter book to understand SLE and other autoimmune diseases that may be part of SLE patients. I strongly recommend buying this book and 'The Lupus Solution'. As a scholar, I like and have to learn about everything, but now about me, things that affect me, and how to solve or manage them. Published by Oxford and with a textbook feel to it, this crucial, outstanding, and comprehensive text is beautifully written and, surprisingly, very straightforward. The author is a name of reference in his field, yet also a master of teaching others complex subjects and concepts. If you have lupus, I really, really encourage you to PLEASE BUY THIS BOOK!

Excellent book for Lupus Patients
This is Dr. Wallace's update of his long-time lupus book. I have had the original since it came out in 1995. He explains everything so you can understand what is happening with this invisible chronic illness. When I was diagnosed in 1985 I had never even heard of Lupus and neither had any of my friends. This book has been an real blessing for me. I do not reccommend you read the entire book, as you might be overwhelened when you see so many types of lupus problems. Rather, use it like an encyclopedia and if you have lupus kidney disease, only look up that part of lupus and try to deal with just that. Also, please remember no one's lupus is the same, what happened to me probably will not happen to you. Find a rheumatologist that has a history of treating lupus patients. Learn about your blood work and see your doctor when you don't feel well, even if the symptom is only that you are tired.

Rejoice in what is known about Lupus and what Dr. Wallace's experience provides for both patients and their supporters
This updated version does an excellent job presenting the latest scientific data and physiological information available in a manner detailed enough to interest those with an extensive medical training, yet straight forward and simply stated to not glaze over the eyes of those with no science background. It tackles the hard questions that only an extensive hands on author can genuinely address. As a family practice doctor who has experienced SLE first hand as both the "care-taker" and "cared-for", I was thrilled to come back to an old friend in the pages of "The Lupus Book" and find that Dr. Wallace had refreshed both his personal insights as well as presented such a comprehensive update of clinical research. When frustrated about the "unknowns" concerning autoimmune diseases, pick up a copy of the Original version and REJOICE regarding how far we have come. Also reading "Coping with Lupus: A Practical Guide to Alleviating the Challenges of SLE" by R.H.Phillips, PHD will provide a full spectrum reference resource to empower the reader while facing the "Wolf".

One of Two Must Have Books for Lupus
There are 2 books I would have any lupus patient buy and use an an on going reference. The Lupus Book is one. The Lupus Encyclopedia is the other. The lupus book answered questions the other didn't and vice versa. Both are written by Rheumatologist. Dr. Wallace's book gives a deep explanation of the disease and what's behind the way it is managed. Whereas the Lupus Encyclopedia is more focused on patient friendly lupus management advice. I was diagnosed with lupus this year and found I turned to both of them over and over again. There are many sections in the Lupus Book I have reread as my understanding deepens. So don't expect to read it once and be done. It really is a meaningful reference to have on hand. This is a deep and wide disease. Don't expect any one book to give you everything.

Not as complete as book version
I really enjoyed the earlier print edition of The Lupus Book. I looked forward to having an updates version that I could keep with me at all times.I don't have a kindle - I'm reading this with the kindle iPhone app, so I don't know how much functionality I'm losing because if that. I find it a but difficult in this app to find where I was if I now to another page. I wish there were a "back" button. But that's just app stuff. My first, and so far only, disappointment with the book itself is that the herb chart is incomplete in the kindle edition. The print version lists many herbs that have been shown to have medicinal value, along with any side effects. The kindle version only goes through this alphabetical list up to some of the herbs starting with the letter "c". That leaves out every herb beginning with a "d" through those with a "z". I want the new chart! This new edition might be a good upgrade, but I wish I had bought the print version.

Stay optimistic!
Got this book from my mother when I was first diagnosed. It definitely has a lot of information that is mostly easy to read. Some of the information gets too technical for me as a patient with no medical background. Still enjoy having the book. I use it as a reference when I have questions. I would not recommend it for someone who is easily scared because it can be overwhelming to know all the details and all the complications that can result with this disease. Not for the worried reader by any means but a very good resource.

Full of useful information
This is a very dense read, full of useful information. I wish I had read it years, maybe decades, ago. Considering buying one for my doctor.
