Lintong County, People's Republic of China, March 1974 Three farmers are digging a well when suddenly their shovels hit something hard. Good read;Great Pictures
The book is a great balance between text and pictures. I bought it for my grandchildren prior to taking them to Atlanta's( GA) High Museum to view the warriors which are on exhibit there until mid-April. They enjoyed the pictures and couldn't turn pages fast enough. They grasped the information about the life of the emporer, the building of his tomb, the creation of the warriors, and their discovery some 2000 years later. I highly recommend the book for a fairly complete overview.

Great introduction before a visit to Xian site and probably has better photos than you could take yourself if you are lucky e Pugh to visit site.

This book has great pictures of the terra cotta warriors.
I bought the book for my grandson who was really pleased.. I had told him about my trip to China and he seemed very interested in my photos. This booked seemed perfect for his age which is 14.

Meaty and interesting
I home educate my children and wanted something about Ancient China that was a "living book" rather than the typical DK/Usborne-type books with their bitty caption-type snippets of information. This book is really good for having a narrative, and giving historical information at the same time. It begins with the discovery of the terracotta army by 3 shepherds who, in the 1970s, were digging a well. The photo of the landscape was excellent because it showed how unassuming and ordinary the area was. The chapters that follow give historical background about the emperor before exploring different aspects of the discovery: the soldiers themselves and how they're organised, how they're made, how they're each so marvellously unique; speculation about what's inside the emperor's tomb; and the legacy which he left behind, including the Great Wall. The pictures are excellent, too: full colour, at least one on every page (some pages have double-spreads), some as paintings, some as photographs.
