Manual of First and Second Fixing Carpentry

Excellent reading for beginner or expert.
Although an experienced DIYer with plumbing, electrics, cars and so on, woodwork has never been my "thing", but now I'm building my own house, I needed a book to get me up to speed in a clear and simple manner. I've tried a few books over the years but nothing that comes anywhere near how clear this book is on the subject of 1st & 2nd fix wood work. Also, not all books on the subject are aimed firmly at the UK market like this book is. Combined with (at last) buying some *good quality* woodworking tools, this book has enabled me to tackle pretty much anything, and more to the point, do it *properly* and within building regulations. The clarity of the text and illustrations in particular mean that if you have some basic skills, decent tools, and take your time, you can tackle the jobs in with confidence. The first part of the book starts with how to read construction drawings ("plans" to you and me!) correctly, then goes through tools you will need and their use & care, types of fixings, and some basic projects to get you using the skills before leading you onto the title matter - hanging doors, and fixing frames, linings etc, glazing, floors (bang up to date too- even covering modern things like posi joists), stairs, roofs, stud walls and so on through to decorative work like skirting and picture rails. What is particularly nice is that the author also draws on his own experience and explains little tips on how to do the work easier or things which help accuracy and so on, so although written in the factual manner you'd expect from a "how-to" book, he also explains *why* we do a thing, which always helps remember it for next time. So I'd say that this book would be as useful for a complete beginner as it would be for an experienced woodworker who needs to ensure they are doing things to code.

Great for all ranges and experience
Great reference book. Not read it front to back yet but I’ve certainly learned a few things. Also helped to confirm different ways of working. Overall given greater confidence. Some diagrams could be a little clearer but you just have to get you head around them. Overall amazing book. Any aspiring chippie, or professional chippie would I’m sure gain lots from this book. 5/5 for sure

Not for DIY
I'm keen to know more about carpentry and thought I'd give this book a go. Its definitely not for the beginner and is very technical and is only for professional tradesmen,in saying that I'm sure pro's would lap this up as it's very detailed. Still kinda glad I purchased it.
