Eye-Opening, Easy to Use, and Truly Insightful
I had a great experience with the AncestryDNA Test Kit. Itโs an excellent starter kit for anyone curious about their ethnic background and family origins. We often assume we know where we come from, but the results can be surprisingly different and in my case, incredibly eye-opening. The process itself is simple and convenient. You just provide a saliva sample, seal it, and send it back using the prepaid postage. Then itโs just a matter of waiting, I received my results in about five weeks, with helpful progress updates along the way. What really stood out to me was how detailed and informative the results were. The ethnicity breakdown is presented clearly, with region-specific insights, historical context, and explanations of how different populations may have moved over time. I was especially surprised by the strong Puerto Rican connection in my results, along with links to Native American ancestry. It wasnโt something I expected, but the way it was explained made everything come together. Another great feature is the ability to connect with potential relatives. I was able to reach out to a few matches and even discovered new family information, which made the experience even more meaningful. While this is a basic test compared to more advanced maternal or paternal lineage kits, itโs a fantastic introduction to understanding your roots. The results feel accurate, the platform is easy to use, and there are plenty of ways to explore further without needing a subscription right away. Overall, this is more than just a fun activity, itโs the start of a deeper personal journey. Excellent value and highly recommended!

Product as described
Shipping time was adequate. Product was well packaged for protection during shipping. I used completed the sample and received the results within the advertise time. The results are very telling and the amount of genealogical information is good.

Ancestry DNA - Highly recommend
The DNA breakdown is amazing to see that level of detail! Some I knew but others I did not and seeing the percentages of DNA and maps of where ancestors were located was fascinating. The price special was so worth it!

some advantages over other testing companies
I've done DNA testing with all of the major companies now. And I've been at this DNA stuff for almost 15 years now. * I found the ethnicity estimate to be just about equal to everyone else. You can get more detail running your own models via gedmatch but for the curious or beginner, this is the easy result. If you just want to know whether you need a kilt or lederhosen or green beer for the next holiday seasons then this works as well, with many particular limitations, as any of the others. * There's no medical interpretation - most don't anymore. You can get good medical results running your raw download through Promethease for a few bucks. If you want to know medical propensities then Ancestry won't help much on its own. * The relationship calculations are pretty accurate and the database is huge. Compared to my other tests, this one returned far more and much closer connections. If you're looking for birth parents and such, this is the place to start. Just remember that the calculator is an estimate and other possibilities exist. - The sampling process was simple "spit in a tube, mail it in" - I much prefer cheek swabs but this gets the job done. - Time was super fast for me - 4 weeks from mail-in. I have a test out with one company that is nearing 3 months to process. - The user interface is pretty simple for newbies but doesn't offer much in the way of analysis tools for those who have DNA experience. Gedmatch can makeup for the shortfall in analysis tools if you can get your matches to upload there. - The ease of creating an attached tree makes for some particularly easy genealogical research to confirm/refute family connections. - The ease of creating an attached tree makes for some particularly prevalent errors in family trees. - yDNA and mtDNA predictive markers are hidden in these results if you want to make an effort to dig them out. - The marketing of this tester has created a large database of folks who were only interested in ethnicity and admixture estimates who have no interest in and won't reply to genealogy queries. Many haven't logged back in since they got their results back. There seem to be a lot of customers who forgot that molecular biology, human origins and migrations geography, and world history weren't their best subjects in school and were expecting this to return an easy result to "grasp it all" in a few minutes. The more you want to dig, the more complex the understanding will become. "DNA for Dummies" is a master's degree - "All You Ever Wanted to Know..." is a PhD. If you get hung up on needing to understand it all in a few short hours then you're going to get very frustrated. Take it in a little at a time. Having spent many $1000's on this hobby over the years, I'm very pleased with this $70 investment into understanding who I am and where I came from. Your mileage may vary.

Seems to be accurate, fun way to learn family heritage
I have been interested for some time in finding more about my DNA and family makeup. The biggest thing that had prevented me was the cost. I personally think these are a bit overpriced at 99 bucks, but they do go on sale from time to time and I managed to get mine at a more reasonable cost of 59 dollars instead during the holidays. If you want to find out more about your heritage though, access to the ancestry database costs more. It appears from some of my early queries of some of the family information that the database doesnโt always include the last couple of decades of information though. There is a two week trial with the database. Included in the box are the instructions, a pre-paid mailing box, a plastic, sealable bag, and the saliva container. The instructions are pretty clear as you have to register an account on the Ancestry website and activate the kit so that you can get the results. The hardest part is making sure you have enough saliva to fill the vial. The preserving solution in the cap is a bit of a pain to get to release into the vial as you are supposed to tighten the cap which is supposed to release the solution, which took a couple tries of loosening the cap and retightening to get to work. After mailing, the results are supposed to be returned within 6 to 8 weeks. Even being around the holidays, it only took about 4 to 5 weeks to get the results. Granted, there were no big surprises for me but the test does appear to be accurate. It accurately told me where our family migrated to and based on what I know of my family, the majority of the percentage of my DNA test matched the regions of the world that I knew about. There were some new things I learned about my DNA makeup in terms of some of the other mix in my DNA, which I found interesting though. It would be nice for a few more DNA details, but it is possibly the limitation of the current technology of the testing. Unfortunately for me, there were only 2nd cousins and higher listed in the DNA match that had also taken the tests, but it was interesting to learn some new names in the family tree. The in-laws also took the tests and the DNA test accurately matched to their daughter. Whew, no milkman there. Hopefully the database will grow over time with more matches. Granted there are some limitations to this type of DNA test but this should be something everyone should take so that everyone can learn like I did that we are all a mix of a variety of ethnic histories. This is a really interesting way to find out more about your family history. 4 stars

Better priced on Amazon than the product website
I got this authentic DNA kit at a better price than the actual website, during their Motherโs Day sale. The kit arrived and was very easy to use. It gives you step by step instructions to make an account, download the app, register your kit and then take and mail your test. It took just a few seconds to spit into the collection tube and complete the test. There are options to expedite your test results, I did not do that. I had my results within 2 weeks. Interesting to see your results and also the traits you inherited from each parent. Glad I tried it.

Worth the Money, hear me out
All we did was spit in the tube and shipped it off. In ONE month we got our results back. We found out about my husbands background and we found out who his dad was. Turns out we knew him all along lol. In the results, there was also 5 character traits that he actually does have that were listed. You could know more but youโd have to pay for a subscription. I got everything I needed without the subscription though!

DO NOT BUY IF YOUโRE BASED OUTSIDE THE US
This product should not be made available for shipment outside the US. To have your DNA sample analyzed you will need to collect the specimen and ship it back to the US so that Ancestry can analyze. However, the postage stamp for the return package is only for within the US. If I you contact Aramex or any other shipping company to send a human specimen, they will ask for a CDC report. I tried visiting govt clinics and calling ministry of health and they all confirmed that this canโt be done if they werenโt the ones collecting the specimens. So this product is useless and you will lose money..

Amazing, Cool, Love the Ancestry DNA Kit
Not sponsored just a fan! This is my third time purchasing this kit via Amazon as it was on sale for Cyber Monday. Makes a great gift. It's easy to use, easy to send off to the lab, and it's fun to get the email alerting you to the results. As an amateur genealogist who has spent long hours building our family tree through the Ancestry site (corroborating with birth, marriage, death certificates; war records, burial information, immigration documentation, family archives) I will emphasize that the Ancestry DNA test yields more specific, accurate results when added *to* other verifiable data. When the DNA test stands alone it's conjecture. The more factual information you input the better the outcome, so consider filling up your tree. Example: with testing alone, results may say 80% of your ancestors come from France and 18% Canada, 2% Other. However when you combine the test with other facts you load into the Ancestry program, the test can zoom in for a more specific result to say 80% France > Normandy; 20% Canada > Southern Ontario Settlers (Ottawa Valley); 2% Sweden. Over time, Ancestry will also alert you to when you get a DNA match - that is, when close or distant family members also test and get connected to you. I did my own kit three years ago and I continue to get new information from it which I enjoy! Highly recommend.

Most of my family and various in laws have tested with Ancestry now. My wife found out via ancestry that one great grandfather and one great great grandfather were someone completely different than recorded and known by the family. She also found via ancestry that another great grandfather had a whole extra family after her great grandmother died young and was able to trace several living children and grandchildren of the resulting half great uncles and aunts, who she is now in touch with on a fairly regular basis. On my side we found a close family friend of many years' closest match was my grandma and then my mum was also a very close match, we had no idea she was related so that was a nice surprise. My wife has also done 23andme but functionality on there is a lot more limited and there are far fewer UK users. So would recommend Ancestry more. It is cheaper to order from Amazon as opposed to from the Ancestry site, as from the Ancestry site tests are shipped from Germany which costs quite a bit extra per test and it can take up to three weeks to arrive. I had already used Ancestry for general genealogy purposes since the mid-noughties so had full membership already, which covers unlimited use and functionality of the DNA 'portal' and tools. As others have said the Ancestry matches tools are not the best and are lacking compared to other sites. Also Ancestry is either unavailable or is simply just not popular in most European, Asian and African countries so if your ancestry is not mainly from the UK you won't have many matches and are likely to have a less detailed ethnicity estimate. It is possible to upload your raw data to other sites except for 23andMe and I would recommend this, but make sure you read up on the sites and their reputation for data protection and transparency first. My Heritage are particularly good for matches with many tools Ancestry don't have and a much more user friendly layout, though their ethnicity estimate is highly inaccurate for most users and should be read for comedy value only.
