War of the Cards (Queen of Hearts, 3)

A Wonderland to do Mr. Carroll Proud
I stumbled upon Dinah's story in February of 2015. I've always loved Alice in Wonderland, as well as stories that explore how villains came to be. This was the perfect blend of the two.Flash forward more than three years and I'm finally able to wrap up her story. It's a beautiful trilogy about a resilient, flawed teenager (yes, let's not forget this part) I couldn't help but love and cheer for. The darkness that Carroll's Queen of Hearts embodies so well is clearly present in Dinah early on. It's her struggle against it, her struggle to rise up and breathe life into the better aspects of her nature that make the story so compelling.I found this installment pulled at my heartstrings more than the others. There were times when I didn't know if I should be reading it in public. At one point, I almost started to cry while waiting for my Starbucks. The war was brutal and graphic and I wondered if anyone would be left by the end.Colleen Oakes does a fantastic job of bringing Wonderland to life in a way that is both surprising and surprisingly familiar. Using Carroll's Wonderland as a framework, she truly made his world her own. The twists and unique touches kept me guessing and always made me smile. I'm sad it came to an end but it's an ending Dinah earned one page at a time.I would absolutely recommend this to everyone, young and old. Just go read it.

WHAT AN ENDING TO THIS AMAZING AND WONDERFUL SERIES
oooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyggggggggggggggoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooodddddddddddddddddddddGUYS! WHAT AN ENDING TO THIS AMAZING AND WONDERFUL SERIES!Warning: spoilers below.. probably... maybe..okay there are..read at your own risk.I freaking love Dinah so freaking much and I was so happy that she finally became the queen that she was born to be. She slayed throughout the book and ended up marrying the man of her dreams.. even if he wasn't 100% into the whole thing. Anyhoo... they obviously, sort of, lived happily ever after. However, they to face so many freaking obstacles throughout the book. Long story short: the people I wanted dead.. died. The things I wanted to happen.. happened. I cried when certain people I didn't want to die.. died. I cried happy tears when I read the last chapter of this book. Now I'm completely sad because it's over. Lucky for me.. I have alllllll three books so I can reread them whenever I freaking want. Now the one thing I really liked about this book was the "black fury" inside of her. Plus this book sort of gave you a little, like teeny tiny, glimpse of the queen of hearts we see now.. however that queen didn't have a happy ending. I think that's why I liked this version so much because it was such a contrast from we are used to knowing about the Queen of Hearts. I also really liked getting a different version of the cards. The battles/action were so freaking good. That's where you will get some sad and happy moments. Just trust me. Then there's the thing she has built for her brother - which was so freaking sweet.Overall, I loved this book. I'm happy I finally got to read it. I'm sad that it's over.

Dark and delicious fantasy
I acquired book two of this trilogy, "Blood of Wonderland" at the dollar store, and as soon as I finished reading the middle of this trilogy, I immediately purchased book one and three of this amazing trilogy. "War of the Cards" is the final book in this twisted, yet gripping modern tale of the original 1865, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." Colleen Oakes seized my attention with her awesome poetic prowess and gripping storyline. In a nutshell, this trilogy is about princess Dinah and the quest for a lifetime of reciprocated love and success with the man she loves, Wardley. Before I even started reading book three of this trilogy, "War of the Cards," I assumed Princess Dinah would be made queen of Wonderland and deem Wardley, the man she loves, her king, and love and laughter become the dominating emotions forever. Despite the predicable moments, or so I thought, the story kept me going, and the medieval battle violence was often intense. The fury whispered to her that she would never be loved, and it made her mouth water with blood...my dark heart beats just fine and it's big enough to sustain my rage and my mercy Dinah said. (Colleen Oakes) Dinah drew her sword...each vein flooded with an ecstasy she had never known...she pulled her sword, slick with blood from his body and smiled winsomely and then killed another...the chaos of war, it was terrible and wonderful and at the same time, the fear of death and the rush of power equally tingling through her system as she pulled her sword from body after body. (pg. 100-102) Oakes seems to have a tangible ghost hand that reaches into the core of your soul and gently rips it from your body, yet you're not afraid, and your senses are transported to a wonderous realm of delicious deceits. The evils of politics and the yearning for living a life of reciprocated love is marvelous illustrated in "War of the Cards," and I'm not much of a fan for fantasy fiction, but "War of the Cards" was a fascinating read.

Captivating
I purchased the whole series on amazon, and find it very captivating. I love the different point of view of Dinah. If you like the darker alice in wonderland then this is a great series to read.

I love how this book ends a trilogy
I understand why this book was written as one book but I almost feel that it need to be two. That being said, I love how this book ends a trilogy. While this is not how things end in real life, it has a reality feel to it. I love the dedication page and I love the way the back sums up this book: This is not a happy ending. This is the story of the Queen of Hearts.
