Hand cranked generator with rectangular coil also works as a DC motor
DC motor kit with rectangular coil assembly allows students to understand magnetism, forces and torques. The motor kit is marketed for its design as a generator. However, with just 6 volts DC on the brushes, the assembly acts as a DC motor. It is impressive to watch a cell phone video of the motor motion in slow motion! The assembly takes very little time as our shipped kit was preassembled and was ready to go. My student snipped the wire connections on the two LEDs for using the apparatus as a DC motor. You can always reconnect the LED wires to go back into the generator mode - if you wish to see red light or green light depending on the rotation direction of the crank. So, you can use this apparatus as a generator and watch the red or green diode light up - depending on the rotation direction of the rectangular coil. Or, as a DC motor - with a rectangular coil. Remember, the DC motor requires say, 6 volts ( using 4 of 1.5 volt AA batteries). After playing around with the generator, remove the durable rubber band from the hand crank with large pulley (which helps rotate the rectangular coil) . Then, connect the assembly to 4 AA batteries placed in series. Then watch the armature rotate! Do not forget to start the rectangular coil at an angle so that the two brushes individually touch the separate commutators. A small nudge of the coil is helpful to start the motor rotating - after connecting the battery in series to the brush connectors. Students will start to get the idea that the DC motor has an aspect that there is generator action going on here. This means that the generator emf goes against the current flowing in the magnetic rectangular coil. Therefore the spinning motor draws a smaller amount of current vs. the current that would flow if one blocked the rectangular coil from rotating. So students learn not to allow the motor to get stuck in one position, not rotate, and draw current that could damage the apparatus. This apparatus is alot of fun and a wonderful design to learn about motors and generators.

Good Tool for Physics Labs
As a physics teacher, I used it in a lab with very little difficulty. Occasionally, the magnet(s) would fall out (middle- and high-school students can be a bit rough) and it took a little trial-and-error to get them oriented correctly. Also, sometime the rubber band around the pulley would slip. But all-in-all, it's a good tool for experimenting with a DC generator.

A good quality demonstration device
It arrived in its own package. It works flawlessly and is a great product to be used as a demonstration tool for teaching principles of electricity at a University Physics class. Very satisfied with the purchase.

It did not work
It did not work? I returned it. Return by Amazon was easy and I hope to get one that does in fact, function.

Belt slipped after 4-5 use
This product worked as expected. I bought it for my son science project. Issue is the belt that is used for rotating the coil, It keep slipping after few use.

Great for demonstrating generation of DC current
In my basic electricity course electromagneticism is an important section. This product give a clear representation of how moving a coil of wire in a magnetic field generates a current.
