A must have for anyone who coaches others
Whether it is at work or at a personal level, this book is a life changing tool. I definitely recommend it to those who need to coach and guide either those who are at the beginning, middle or end of their careers or going through a transition in their personal lives. It provides appropriate language to use to remain objective and help motivate others. Thanks

A lot of overblown hype
This book is OK, but not great, and contains information you can find elsewhere. I bought the 3rd edition for about seven bucks....I'm glad I did not pay $70, as I would have been angry. This book is not that good.You don't read this book cover to cover, from beginning to end...it's not written that way. The book is written as a "list," sort of a compendium of problems/solutions. Competencies are listed and when you find a competency you are weak at, this book tells you which OTHER competencies you need to fix the problem. Basically, you will be flipping through pages collecting answers.The "solutions" that are given are by no means comprehensive. They are generalized and very short (usually one paragraph) because there are so many competencies listed in this book that not enough space can be dedicated to any one of them in any detail. Another challenge for me was that I did not find any ground-breaking material here; the solutions given are in books I have already read.My suggestion is this: Once you discover a behavior that is undesirable (either through self-discovery or through a performance review at your job), buy one or more books on that subject and learn all the details you need to help you. This book will not give you those details! That said, if you are uninitiated to self-help books, this is a good place to start.Overall, this book does not live up to its hype or its inflated price, so buy a cheap used copy.UPDATE March 15, 2012: This review is based on the 3rd edition published in 2000, (and there is a 4th edition, published in 2004), but I wanted to clarify that my initial exposure to this book was the 4th edition. An instructor of mine at the university swore by this book, and he and a colleague, using this book (which I'm not kidding, they gave the reverence of a bible) developed a "ground-breaking" motivational/teaching seminar which they presented at the university. Ground-breaking? Not so much, and the program was never repeated.Nonetheless, I thought I should add this book to my collection, and I looked at the price of both editions, and decided to pay for the 3rd edition, and not the 4th. After I received my book, I took it to my instructor's office and flipped through the two books (my 3rd edition and his 4th edition) side by side, and very little has changed; in fact, so little that to call the 4th edition a "new" edition is a stretch. I hold to my previous statements about its effectiveness and uselfulness.
