Great product (updated Jan 2018)
Item arrived in great condition, and works are expected. I have owned other Scepter water cans for years and they hold up very well to the elements, and can withstand a lot of dropping, moving and general abuse. ---- update Jan 2018 ---- Having bought and used these containers since 2004, the above review covers my main experiences. Except ... Since mid 2017 Scepter has been shipping these Jerry Cans with new vent caps and apparently a new HDPE formula that leaves the new cans with a horrible odor that takes some time to remove. A number of reviewers have complained about the vent caps, they are like "pill bottles" in that you must push in to engage a catch to then be able to turn them. Additionally the vent caps are now designed to leak, and no longer seal the Jerry Cans, frankly a really stupid design choice probably driven by some silly CARB requirement. How to fix. Easy. Get a pair of long nose pliers, and a 1/4 chisel or a dremel tool (or similar). Remove the vent cap, inside there is a nipple of plastic which looks like it should engage the hole in the jerry can vent. In fact it is designed to prevent the vent from properly closing. Take the long nose pliers, grab the nipple at the base, grab, and twist around until the nipple breaks off. Next take a small chisel or a dremel tool or similar and flatten what residue remains, to leave a nice flat area, surrounded by a small ring that raises off the back of the vent (that is the original seal from the old design). The inner part of the vent will want to turn, so just insert a small jewelers screwdriver or some other shim, between the outer and inner parts of the vent cap to stop it turning. Also the vents of the older Jerry Cans were properly finished, the new ones are left unfinished (to presumably make them leak). All you need to do is use the chisel, or dremel, or sandpaper, or sharp knife, or a file; to smooth the flat surface of the vent. This allows the vent cap to seal against it, and only requires the removal of the roto-mold seam, not a major material removal. It took me about a minute to finish the job, the vent works perfectly now, the way it used to, except for the silly pill container push in. If you really hate that, then just pop the inner section of the vent cap, out of the outer section (with a jewelers screwdriver) and only use the inner section to seal the jerry can. -- As for the terrible odor, rinse a few times, fill with city water (for the chemicals) and let it sit for week. Drain, flush, and i found the odor was gone.

Very Quality, much better than Reliance Aquatainer
These are definitely where you want to put your money. They are thick plastic made in Canada not China. They will not crack unless you are really trying. They are resistant to UV and made of HDPE so they will not leech plastic into your water. When they arrived, they need to be cleaned out because they smell like plastic (to be expected), just fill with hot water some baking soda and bleach and rinse. To store water long term, add 1 teaspoon of bleach to each 5 gallon container.

Rugged 5-Gallon Water Jug That Feels Ready for Anything
5/5. This Scepter 5-gallon water jug is excellent—great size for camping and emergency storage, and it feels very sturdy and well-built. The reversible spout makes pouring much easier and less messy, and the food-grade, BPA-free plastic gives extra peace of mind for long-term use. No leaks, no weird smells, and no problems so far. Things to improve: None so far.

Good water storage
Just as ordered and super fast order fulfillment and delivery. Very thick BPA free plastic. I tried just buying water jugs from the grocery store to have some emergency water on hand, but one by one they all leaked onto the pantry floor. These should hold up much better. Each one came with its own spout.

(Also) Needs Handle on Side
Get the job done for what i need them for. Needs a handle on the side. It’s very difficult to dump/fill when full (especially for a chick that doesn’t lift weights, but I’m also not a weakling) 🤷🏽♀️😏

Scepter Water Cans fit the bill for our use perfectly
These were purchased for transporting water with a horse trailer for a 12 hour trip. Hard to find some that seem pretty heavy duty, are easy to use, and with secure LEAK PROOF closure. These certainly are not the least expensive, but we wanted quality. After some research, the reviews on these seemed good. They arrived quickly and the apparent quality of the product exceeded my expectations. I have leak tested these and they are just fine. Even cleaning them with hot water and shaking them (pressure inside) they held their seal if capped tightly. We wanted the ones built like a gas can for easy pouring into a water bucket. If you are looking for one camping use to get water for glasses right from the can, look elsewhere. My experience with the spigot type water cans is they will leak if transported with water in them. With these, you would pour the water into another receptacle. The reviews talked about possible plastic smell, etc. After a few rinses with plain hot water and drying overnight. One was perfect and the other had a slight smell inside. My wife couldn't smell it, but I am very sensitive to that smell. A couple of tablespoons of baking soda and semi hot water shaken about and left to sit over night. Then shaken again a few times over the next day, poured out and let to dry and I could not smell any residual odor. Our horses are very sensitive to water smells. Most people are too. I'd recommend NOT using soap, but perhaps a VERY mild solution of diluted dishwashing soap would be OK, if you make certain they are rinsed super well until there is no soap odor. Your call.

Useful!
My son and his little family want to have an emergency water supply. Living in an tiny apartment tends to make this a challenge. This was the prefect size to start with. It's easy to carry even when full and can be tucked away in a closet without taking up valuable space.
