First book I've read written in cgi
Another reviewer said this book is not realistic. It's not but I read a lot of books that are not realistic. Sci-fi is seldom realistic for example. The problem with this book is that it is not plausible in addition to not being realistic. For example he decides to land his civilian seaplane on a us aircraft carrier. As if the navy would let that happen. Then, in 6 hours, his crew designs, builds and installs a tailhook. Uh-huh.Or he does his first hi Altitude parachute jump at night with a (sort of) SEALteam on a combat raid. Yeah, right.Alex Hawke is like some wierd spawn of Napoleon Solo and Batman. TV show versions. It also reads as if the author got paid by the adjective. He didn't seem able to write a sentence without a lot of them. I think that if I notice an adjective, there are too many.Still, a fun read and i have it 4 stars for that. It was good enough that I'll probably read book 2.Not the kind of book I'll read twice.

I really did enjoy this book
I really did enjoy this book. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is of no fault to the author. It is more that the writing style and story-telling is a bit different to other authors I read usually (this is only my opinion) such as Child, Crais, Peterson & Baldacci. I found myself putting the book down at times and not feeling compelled to pick it back up in a hurry as it dragged a little at times where I thought it didn't need to (such as the level of development put into the MP character when I felt it didn't need to go that extent). Again, this is only an individualistic view of the story where others will view it as thorough background story development.Overall though, the characters as a whole were portrayed very well and the plot definitely developed at a crisp rate in the latter half of the book.

Incredibly Disappointing
Bought two books in the Hawke series. I read this one and after doing so, know there is no way I will start the second. I was most disappointed in the character of Hawke: he is just not believable: a descendent from pirates, a gazillionaire, member of elite special forces, international paramilitary man, and a member of the aristocracy. Really? How much can you cram into one character? In addition, the dialogue between the character's, especially Hawke's various testosterone-filled buddies, is elementary and stereotypical. Throw in Hawke's miraculous ability to instantaneously recover from PTSD related to the revelation of memories buried for 30 years and a pirate's treasure, and the inability to believe any of the story is tripled. I bought this book for a beach read and look forward on vacation to reading such novels, as an escape. This one, though, lacks any resemblance to reality. Sorry, but it is a dud, which is too bad, because the underlying story about Cuba and a coupe had so much potential.

Good story but hard to read
This was a good story, but unlike other authors, it was often hard to read. With Vince Flynn novels, I often read until I fell asleep. I read his entire Mitch Rapp series in a month. I have now read several Ted Bell novels and won't buy anymore. For such a good story, don't know why it's so hard to read.

Good opening for Hawke series
I had read another Alex Hawke book previously and wanted to read the first to get a background on the main character. A very entertaining read. Sets the basis for the future books. Great character.

Fun
Lots of action, large cast of characters. Well written. Five stars for that. Everything a little larger than life (even the parrot), a little stereotypic, a little predictable, a bit like a Romance, so one star deduction.

Great suspense, and very well written and descriptive
Great suspense, and very well written and descriptive. But why does every character use a cuss word in every sentence they quote?

Great political thriller
I cautiously started this book and got hooked. I love political thrillers, and while Mitch Rapp is my favorite, Alex Hawke is definitely a page turner. I was intrigued by where the historical context would take me. I am starting #2 and await another great storyline!

Not very good writing. Can't see how this mess got pass the editors. I tried. Really, I did. But, couldn't make it to the middle of this book before I tossed it in the waste can. So, to speak. Since I got it through Kindle. This book really needs to go back to the author for rewriting. Better, yet. Start again.

BORING
What A terrible read, how anyone could compare this unbelievable Hawke character to Mitch Rapp, Scott Coleman, Dewey Andrea's or even the gray man is beyond me. This book just never gets going. If you have trouble sleeping try reading Hawke, guaranteed to put you to sleep. If I could rate lower than 1 star I would have. All up Boring Boring Boring.
