Good tester but has a big gotcha
It is a good tester, gets the job done in a lot of cases. However, in my industry, it is fairly common to have serial (DB9 and DB25) cables where pins are looped back at one end only (RTS to CTS, etc.) and do not connect to the opposite end.This tester CANNOT verify cables like that. After testing cables I knew were good (and even ringing them out with a meter) but the tester did not show good, I opened a support ticket with Hobbes. Support responded that pins must go from one end of the cable to the other for the tester to detect them and confirmed that it cannot detect where pins may be jumped at only one end.This renders the tester useless for half the cables I work with. Though I don't know the mechanics of the tester, I would think this could be resolved with a firmware update. Hobbies said they had no plans to release updated firmware, so I'm stuck with a tester that doesn't do all it should and that I need.The product listing should state the tester's limitations.
