Lots of storage for the size
I bought this to use as my Time Machine backup drive for my MacBook Pro, and it’s been exactly what I needed. It was easy to set up, works well with the Mac, and gives me plenty of space for regular backups without having to think about it too much. That’s really what I wanted from it. Plug it in, let Time Machine do its thing, and know I’ve got a proper backup if anything goes wrong. It’s also compact enough that it doesn’t take up much room on the desk or feel like some big external drive hanging off the laptop. I also like that it doesn’t need a separate power source, so there’s no extra power brick or cable to deal with. It’s not the fastest thing in the world compared to an SSD, but for Time Machine backups it doesn’t need to be. It’s reliable, has loads of storage, and does the job quietly in the background.

Dead after 4 months - and an absurd "Catch 22" making the warranty worthless
This was used as a Macbook M1 Pro backup (Time Machine) disk. Never moved about - just sat on shelf in a Macbook used as a desktop replacement. Judging by other reviews, it's a shoddy product with a high probability of wasting your time and money. Mine is no longer even recognized - impossible to access, erase, test, etc. To add: speaking of wasting time and money - I contacted Western Digital 12 days ago. Their warranty insists I return the drive to them (paying the shipping costs myself) after erasing my confidential data. How does one erase data from a drive that won't mount? Nearly two weeks ago, they had me take pictures, provide a receipt etc. and promised to get back. Haven't heard a peep, despite emailing back. No wonder the Japanese, Koreans, etc. are kicking our tails in this technology . . . terrible design, shoddy QA, equally poor warranty support. Update: 23 days later Western Digital has finally gotten back to me. They insist the only way they will honor their warranty is if they get the drive and platter back intact (they declined my offer to send the drive back, with the platter damaged). It's one thing to imagine Western Digital has a policy not to steal confidential data. Something else to imagine every one of their employees would honor it. Bottom line - the Western Digital warranty is essentially worthless for anyone who stores confidential data (either their own or their customers') on one of their drives - and then finds the drive won't even mount in order to erase the contents before returning it. I usually hate to hear that some lawyer has started a class action lawsuit. Western Digital's 5TB drives - and their stonewalling of customers who've lost time, money, and sensitive data - might be the exception.

Great general use drive - portable and reliable - maybe a tad bit slower than I'd like
Inexpensive backup! I typically use a combination of hard drives for my photography backups. For important stuff like weddings, I only use solid state drives, but for my everyday photos like kids sports or travel, I don't mind using a mechanical drive. The thing I consider when buying one of these is the price per GB. I use a high-resolution 61 MP camera and usually keep both RAW and JPG copies. My RAW files can be 80GB per image or higher, so I fill these up fast. This is a great alternative option to buying SSDs which are currently double the price. This is my second one from WD and I'm pleased with the size and stability of the drive. It's just a bit thicker than my SSDs but still easily portable for when I'm on the road. The drive runs extremely quiet too and I don't notice a lot of heat when I'm using it. Connection is simple, just plug and play for Window or Mac. The speed isn't great. Obviously, no challenge to a SSD which is lightning fast for me, but I think the speed on this could be a bit faster. Granted, my files are big and 5TB allows for a lot of folders and files, but I feel like it drags a little bit when I open my Finder. I'm using this on a Mac Studio M2. I haven't had any issues with WD drives failing in the past, so I do trust that this will last quite a while. As I mentioned before, I wouldn't put critical files on it unless I had another backup copy somewhere. But for general use, portability, and storage amount, this works great. I never use the software that comes preloaded on the drives, so I can't speak to that. I've heard that it's no good anyway, but it's basically not an issue. I typically delete anything pre-loaded anyway.

5TB of Peace: Mac Screaming ‘Storage Full’? This 5TB Drive Shuts It Up Instantly.
My Mac was one notification away from a nervous breakdown with the constant “Storage Almost Full” pop-ups. Enter this WD 5TB My Passport — the little navy lifesaver I didn’t know I needed. It plugs in with USB-C/USB 3.1, connects instantly, and starts working like, “Relax… I got you.” Transfers are fast, it mounts in seconds, and the password protection feels legit without being complicated. I dumped YEARS of photos, videos, school/work files, and creator chaos onto it, and it still has plenty of room left. The size is perfect for travel, the build feels solid, and it looks clean sitting next to a MacBook instead of some clunky hard drive from 2012. If you’re constantly out of storage, editing content, taking way too many pics, or juggling life on your laptop, this thing restores your sanity. Reliable, durable, super portable — and it actually fixes the problem instead of pretending to. 10/10, my Mac is finally quiet. ***ADAPTER NEEDED FOR MOST MACS IN ORDER TO PLUG IN :)

Quality buy, value for money.
A well trusted brand. Easy setup and use, with useful features like password protection. Quality build, though slightly on heavy side for the 5TB Mac version.
