yes the system is designed to work with a variety of backgrounds, naturally the installation needs to be done properly. and we make these recommendations in the installation manual

Q: Can you use shorter backdrops on these as well (4 1/2 feet)?

There is no reason you cannot use a shorter backdrop for this support kit. We can also provide widths less than 10 feet if that helps?

Q: the paper rolls that I've purchased (from a few different retailers) are on a 2" diameter roll. how could this be used in this case?

If the rolls come with cores that do not fit over the aluminum bars( such as the 54" seamless) all you do is attach one end of the paper with tape in two or three locations on the Aluminum bar, and roll it up, takes in its entirety 2-5 minutes to do.
