Technically they do work as headphones; the sound is actually pretty good for headphones in this price range, which is why they get an extra star. My problem with these is that the signal cuts out after about 25 inches, so unless you have your device at shoulder level and a direct line of sight, it is like listening to AM radio in a cave.
