Pilot episode of the popular television detective drama, about the unconventional sleuth played by Patricia Routledge. Retired housewife Hetty Wainthropp has decided to track down her best friend's long-lost son, a quest that sends her into the dark back streets and seedy strip clubs of London, into a world of vulnerable teenage runaways.

I know this was a pilot
Knowing this was the pilot of the following series, it disappointed me a little. The story was not as good as all four of the following seasons.Patricia Routledge was wonderful as usual.I am glad I have the whole collection and I still feel a fifth season would have been good to finish off the story properly.

Not as bad as expected by a long shot.
I thought this would be appalling judging by the other reviews but it's actually not bad. It's less a detective mystery and more of a drama about family really. So if you can appreciate it for that and bear in mind that they hadn't found the right mix of writers and actors that came together so well for the TV series; then it's worth a watch. Patricia Routledge is always a joy to watch!

hetty
Have watched every episode a number of time. Patricia Routledge is a great actress. She caught the essence of, what is in effect, a rather clever busy-body.

but good performances and nice scenery
Very enjoyable series. It seems a little dated now (it is interesting to see how quickly the world changes), but good performances and nice scenery.

HETTY WAINTHROPP PILOT
Dvd arrived in good time for Christmas so well done on that front! Rather more serious than the spin-off series, but interesting all the same.Patricia Routledge's performance more low-key, but none the worse for that. Doubt if it's been shown much on tv so a good opportunity to catch up.
