Q: How well does it glow? Does the lume need charging?

Even with charging it’s more like the lume of glow in the dark paint vs watch level lume. 1 Gram of super luminova is about $80. The clock would be in the thousands with real watch level lume.

Q: Can it be placed on a covered patio, out of the sun and rain?

I would say yes. It is made of plastic and well made. Keep perfect time. I love mine and have it in the garage where temperatures can range from 40 to 92 degrees F. Hope this helps. Dave

Q: Is it possible to open up the 'crystal'? I want to mod the seconds hand (paint it). Thanks!

I am not the final authority on this, but I'd say no. It seems that the crystal is integrated into the bezel of the clock. It really is a first-rate clock. People's eyes are drawn to it.
