I want to crimp some lugs (8, 6, and 4 awg) in the engine compartment of my car, so I won't have a flat, solid surface to work on. Will this work?

...It could be done. With that being said, a significant amount of space/force is needed to perform the crimp. The tool is ~23" long and the handle must open ~ 90° (less if you get a little creative). You might want to consider a Hydraulic Cable Lug Crimper alternative. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HJXHX1K/ref=s9_acsd_simh_hd_bw_b2Jxg_c_x_4_w?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-3&pf_rd_r=D8K0AHF10A6BQ872QX94&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=3ac0a1da-7ca7-5437-a562-f607943a49aa&pf_rd_i=553392UPDATE: JayD is correct in that 4 awg (and below) shouldn't be to bad; I kept flashing back to all the 4/0 crimps I did... Unless you are considerably strong, 4/0 should be done against a flat/secure surface.

Sorry I don't have the tool handy, but I believe it is made in China. The quality is very good. My marine supply store uses this crimper and it gets used a LOT at that store. Their' crimper has gotten a little sloppy over the years, but still works fine. I wasn't going to buy one because when I looked, they were close to four hundred dollars. This crimper is an excellent value. I was skeptical when I ordered it, even though it looked just like the one I used for 6.5 hours at my marine suppler building 22 power cables for my boat.
