Review: Star Trek Discovery Season 2 DVD is excellent - As a fan of the original Star Trek Series I was delighted to see another series emerge namely Discovery. Season 1 was okay but very focused on the Klingons whom I found to be very different, every series changes something because of special effects. Season 2 brought the wonderful Anson Mount as Captain Pike a revelation and a fantastic character, like everyone at the end of Season 1 I wanted to see the new Enterprise and it is fantastic everything I hoped for and more. The stories galloped along I was delighted I had the boxset as I could indulge in several episodes at once and the special effects and look of the series can not be improved a visual treat! The extras included are a treat in themselves. I am left wanting more Discovery and especially wanting a new Star Trek Enterprise with Anton Mount as Captain Pike he brought Pike to life as a fully rounded courageous and fearless Captain of the Enterprise. I loved the Spock, Sarek and Amanda episodes we discover so much more about Spocks family and his early life. A fantastic Cast all round and a great series.
Review: HIt It! - Already had a quick look at the extras plus 2 episodes but having seen the series twice (and counting) I have no hesitation awarding 5 stars to a slick, well produced and superbly acted show. My new favourite Captain, described as an 'overgrown boy scout' who takes the helm in this series, AKA Captain Christopher Pike, played by the excellent Anson Mount, is what a Starfleet Captain should be in my opinion. (like William Shatner's portrayal of Kirk) and I'm delighted that Captain Pike, Number One', Mr. Spock AND the often overlooked 'USS Enterprise', also making a brief cameo in this series, have got their own show 'Strange New Worlds'. I have no doubt that it will be the cherry on the 'Discovery' cake with more tales of space derring do, shocks, surprises and humour. In other words, what I call a darn good yarn, just as 'Discovery' is and worth every penny of it's blu-ray loveliness!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Continuing excellence in Discovery
*by P***7 on 24 December 2019*

A similar start to those of other reviewers.... I've been a Star Trek fan since it was first broadcast on UK TV in 1969 and have all the series and films on video and DVD, having watched them ad infinitum. So here is my "take" on Discovery. To put it bluntly, I think Discovery is excellent. Series 2 is an advance on the first, and the "darker" nature perceived by many isn't a bad thing. A grittier approach to Federation exploration, with highs and lows is, in my view, preferable to everything always working out for the best. Discovery IS unusual, from a Trek perspective, in being (almost) ONE CONTINUOUS STORY from the first through second series. In that respect the structure is more like Babylon 5, another favourite of mine, with the plot developing from episode to episode. This allows a really DEEP DEGREE OF CHARACTERISATION. All the main characters are on show in most of the episodes. It's never a "Chakotay", "Worf", "Kira" etc. episode. The acting is of a very high standard - judge this in the natural way the main players interact with each other. In Discovery series 2 - which is really the point of this review - Anson Mount (Chris Pike) is superb, relating in a totally believable way with those under his command, notably Burnham and Spock. The "bad guy" characters may at times be a bit caricatured, but serve their purpose. This is series TWO.....For comparison, look at where things were at the same point in TNG, DS9 and Voyager, where the characters were still learning to interact properly and the stories were often wooden. And no domination by Bill Shatner with the oft-seen situation of Kirk overacting! PRODUCTION VALUES are on a par with the top-selling movies of the moment. Watch the 40 minute documentary on disc 5 and you'll be amazed that any episode ever gets completed given the complexity of effects, sets, time constraints etc. Some critics have focussed on the issue of Discovery breaking with "canon" - the ongoing Trek timeline set by all the other series. This IS a major consideration for ALL true Trek fans. I was concerned with the concept of the spore drive and the relative sophistication of a mid-23rd century vessel, given what we've seen before. But the latter tends to fade into the background the more you watch and the scene on the Enterprise 1701 bridge at the end of the final episode shows how Kirk's ship may have looked if TOS was being filmed today. The innovative solution to Burnham's actions/spore drive/red angel suit etc. is interesting and goes a long way to restoring canon objections - even if the Federation hierarchy display a degree of gullibility when faced with the testimony/explanations of Spock, Number 1 and Pike at the end! Pushing it or not, it makes for some exciting episodes in series 3. Overall, the pluses FAR outweigh the negatives. Enjoy the programme for its exciting storyline and state-of-the-art CGI. And since things happen - a LOT of them - which have never happened before, the series "boldly goes where no man has gone before", which is the essence of Trek. And the Discovery crew make the point, as they did in series 1, "We are STARFLEET!!"
