Great insert for ANY bag!!
If you are like me you either have the a bag already and it is everything you need except for carrying your camera gear safely, or do not want to spend the extra money for a camera bag ($100-$300). Both of those are why I purchased this insert. I own a D90 Nikon D90 12.3MP DX-Format CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD (Body Only), 28-70mm nikon Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF-S Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras (big lens), Tokina 11-16mmTokina 11-16mm f/2.8 Pro DX Digital Zoom Lens - Nikon (small lens, a couple accessories (lens caps, two filters, extra battery, card reader, two microfiber towels), and a small point a shoot Nikon AW100 underwater camera Nikon COOLPIX AW100 16 MP CMOS Waterproof Digital Camera with GPS and Full HD 1080p Video (Orange). All of these fit in with no problem. The Build Quality: - Initially the material reminded me of military back packs I have had that stood the tests of time and even Afghanistan. Moreover, this is an insert so I wouldn't worry about the material ripping or tearing. The stitches are strong: I was testing the strength and pulled on some of the weaker parts with 20-30lbs of force but nothing tore.Protectiveness: - Usually when I would set my backpack down I was very cautious to set it down as softly as possible, now I lay the backpack down as I usually would without any worry of damaging my gear. The padding is roughly 1/4" - 3/8" thick. Though the pack itself is light the padding feels very "heavy" in quality. The heaviness of the padding gives me comfort that if I were to drop the bag my gear would be safe. Now, the lid is my only worry. Because this is made for a messenger bag there is no need for the insert to close completely (Velcro, zipper). But because I am using a backpack If I were to flip my bag upside down there is a small, very small chance, something could slip out of the insert. If you own a messenger bag I would not worry about this.Organization: - The bag is modifiable. With it come two large separators (for the camera) and two small separators (everything else). This is helpful because not everyone has the same gear and each person has a separate way in which they want to organize their gear. I played with the configuration for a few moments before I decided how I wanted to keep it. The items I mentioned earlier fill the pack up. I could probably fit a flash and some small items but not much more. For me this is all I need. The lid holds the smaller items like my extra battery, card reader, memory card holder.Overall I am very pleased with my purchase. I am traveling to Kauai very soon and will feel safer having this protect my gear. It is also helpful in a old backpack because no one is the wiser about the expensive gear I have hiding inside. When I am traveling if I have any problems with the insert I will promptly edit this review; also, if I find something else I love I will add it, too.

Solid, but not Overwhelming
I purchased this insert for the immediate purpose of replacing the inserts in my existing laptop / camera bag and with the thought that I could use it to make other bags into camera bags.A couple of thoughts:Size: The size is pretty decent. I currently have mine loaded with a Canon D50, with 17-40mm attached, with petal hood on bottom; 70-200mm (the IS f/4 version), with hood and tripod bracket attached; f/1.4mm 50mm; large external flash; wireless remotes; 3 extra camera batteries; double sided charger; 4 extra AA batteries; 4 extra AAA batteries; 2 extra flash cards. In short, it holds a lot of stuff in a pretty tight area. In order to do this, I used some extra dividers from my hold bag inserts. As packed the exterior of my insert has bulged out, so it is closer to 5"W now. I have also started using this as my around the house organization system. I have taken the insert out of my bag and have it tucked in basket. This use as an around the house organizational system was an unanticipated benefit.Construction: The material is fairly light in cushioning. My current laptop / camera bag has plenty of protection, so I was not worried. However, I would probably want to be pretty cautious if I were to just drop the insert into another bag, like a messenger bag or canvas army bag (one option I am considering). That said, at 13" long, it is probably a little too wide to allow me to use one of my existing bags and to dump my cable pouch in with it. However, without a laptop or ipad, it should be pretty functional.Appearance: The color is pretty ugly - it is more of a yellow than orange. However, I figured it would make it easier to see my stuff in my bag. I also figure it should be covered most of the time. My fault for going with the yellow.Features: The top cover is helpful in that it offers webbing for filters and flash cards. However, it make it tougher to get into your stuff in a bag. I guess it is a trade off of protection versus convenience. If so, I would prefer for it to go one way or the other: either no flap, or one that attaches / buckle / clips, etc. so that you are sure that the insert is closed. Conclusion: All in all, I am pleased with the organization of this insert and its functionality. My only reservations are a concern with the padding, the fact that it is kind of ugly and the neither fish nor fowl lid. That said, if you are looking for an insert and either have a bag with independent cushioning or will be careful, I think this insert is an excellent addition to organize your kit.Good luck.

Works for Certain Setups
I bought this because I have a go-to backpack that I carry everything for my day-to-day activities in. Unfortunately, it has not worked out.I'm not fond of the fact that there's no method to keep the top from opening up, when I put this insert into other bags, the top is very likely to flop open and my camera/lenses fly all over the place. The way you can customize the compartments is a nice touch, and the overall height of the case seems to work well for the majority of lenses, and even a Rode Mic.Overall though, for the price and what it does, I had to return it. Instead I got a smaller bag, whose top will fasten and keep my gear in place.

Just too flimsy
I love the idea of this, as I purchased it so I could use my tote bag as a camera bag when needed. It worked pretty well for that. I fit my 7D, 3 extra lenses, and external flash, with accessories in the pockets of the tote. The problem is, it didn't last the first week of use. It split at the top seam (no stress at all on that area), and the foam just got compressed. I also realized that having an open-topped liner in an open-topped tote is a recipe for disaster. Someone knocked over the bag by accident, and the 7D with 24-105L lens came tumbling out. Luckily, no damage.I think I'm too late to return it, but I would recommend you spend up for a more sturdy model, and definitely get one with a top that can be secured.
