Creating trust with the reader.
I agree with the ideas of this book. The examples of the ideas seem superficial, especially the example of whether to take a sweatshirt to the park, or not. The author didn't take the risk of presenting intimate examples of how she was able to apply unschooling principals to very difficult and not-so-obvious situations. I can't imagine that after years of unschooling that she didn't have those kinds of examples to share. She didn't present gray areas. She advises her readers to create trust with their children. But I get the impression that she doesn't trust the readers. The examples feel shallow and safe, unlike unschooling which feels risky and more rewarding. Experienced unschooling parents that I know and respect will admit that unschooling can be terrifying, but they wouldn't choose another path. Perhaps it will take the next generation of unschoolers to lay bare the ups and downs.

Really helpful in understanding unschooling or even a happy home...
We've been unschooling for a year now- so we're new at it- and have lots of questions. This book really helped- I have a much greater understanding of some fundamental things that need to be present in our lives to be successful unschoolers.

A great homeschooling book
I was looking for a relatable read and this was it. I'm currently a homeschooling mom that has been considering transitioning into unschooling. I appreciated the different perspectives this book offered.

Paints a clearer picture
Pam's newest book paints a clearer picture of what it takes to unschool successfully. In this book she gives more aspects to be mindful of, without making the reader feel like they have to copy another family.

helpful
I liked the qualities of unschooling being discussed. I will admit that I skipped some of the stuff about older kids because mine are still young but I plan on coming back to it as they grow! :-)

Inspiring
This is an excellent book on parenting. Even if your children are not home schooled, the practical situations and advice about patience and listening are very valuable. Unschooling is more of a way of being than a prescriptive set of rules and the writer captures the individuality of each family's situation. It's very down to earth, and non judgmental, and should inspire people to give unschooling a go. The journey starts here!

Wise and inspiring
This is a well written book which offers inspiration to any parent feeling uncomfortable or unconnected in their parenting, whether unschooling or not. It provides a fresh perspective on how to approach learning as a family by focusing on curiosity, patience, relationship and trust and has helped me to look at many anxieties I have been holding about parenting
