I am one of those dorks who actually made her own mahl stick in 2020. I used a dowel, a Styrofoam ball, a piece of brown felt, and bits of this and that, and it worked great. But then my life got turned upside-down and I had to leave it behind. Lo and behold Amazon was selling one that you could break down into three pieces and actually store. (This is about the same length as the stick I made. Imagine trying to carry that in a backpack.)The really cool thing about this mahl stick is you are not limited to one length. You've actually, potentially got three different lengths you can work with for at least three different paper sizes. And if you want to only use two of the stick pieces, you can use the "bulb" end and then the outer end and those will screw together without the middle piece. Et voilà.

I've had one of these for years. One piece finally got stripped so I bought another. I can connect the remaining segments to the new stick so I now have more options depending how big I'm painting. If you buy 2 you can take 1 of the rubber tips off and use it as a middle segment. I always use this for fine art painting and sign painting when I'm on the go outdoors or at a live event. Will always have this in my painting tools. The rubbertip isn't as grippy as different so I may plasti dip it or tie a fabric puch on the end. Usually it's not an issue

It comes loose while using it but all I had to to was add red locktite to the threads and that fixed it. It’s sturdy and lightweight I would recommend it.

Love it it is great or detail work. Wish I would've got it years ago. Also love that is something that is portable and it comes apart.

This is an excellent mahl stick made of quality materials. I do not understand some of the comments regarding this stick unscrewing?? I paint 6 to 8 hours daily and have had zero issues. You can always buy lock tight if that were the case but it has been outstanding for me. This is superior to a traditional stick since its adjustable and light weight. I dont understand why many painters are stuck with dinosaur tools. This is a great inexpensive investment!

I love painting fussy little details. A place to rest my hand helps a lot. And it's long enough to use with a bigger canvas. It is kind of heavy, but I am getting used to it.

I like that it’s adjustable. Only downside is I wish the rubber end was a little bigger but it works well for not smudging paint
