Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Switch) (Nintendo Switch)

Full disclosure, I'd give this game 4.5 or 4.75 stars if I could as it's not 100%. That said, it's still a top contender in the action RPG space even four years after its initial release. There's a lot to this game, so I'd recommend checking out the video reviews (Noisy Pixel is typically one of the shortest and most concise). Greatest strengths: Combat is an impossibly good blend of intuitive yet innovative; killing monsters never gets boring. Exploration is also just plain fun and rewarding; it never feels like a waste of time. Even if the materials aren't what one needs, simply collecting them often allows for them to be traded up or down for materials one DOES need to improve one's situation. It manages to make things many games turn into tedious jobs into just plain stupid fun. Weaknesses: While there are amazing innovations, there are also some old-school JRPG drawbacks. Some of the area gating choices feel a bit forced. The chapter end cutscenes can run long, which of course cuts into one's actual playing time. It's also possible to miss and automatically fail side quests if main quest checkpoints are triggered too early, but that didn't bother me so much as give me an excuse to play it through again later. Value Added Bonus: Many of the extra costumes and cosmetic items are now available as free downloads in game, and those can be a lot of fun. Also, while the English voice dubs are better than average, there are menu options which allow one to hear the original Japanese, which is even more fun if it's a language one wants to study.

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is far and away the best game in the Ys series! Great characters, great story, phenomenal and deep combat systems. Engaging side stories, with a wonderfully pleasant gathering and collecting system. All with a huge, beautiful, and lush semi-open world map to explore! This game has it all! Not to mention Ys is the father of action rpg games. They know how to make a fun game through and through!

Buy it and do it now. Ys games are hard to find after release and get expensive.

First, it should be noted this was a PAL version of the game, but North American copies are very hard to find for a decent price these days. This shouldn't matter since the game's language is set based on the Switch's language settings. I was truly blown away by this game, enough to spend 70+ hours on it. The action RPG combat is amazing and fast-paced, most of the boss fights are fun, mostly decent visuals (Docked mode is way better, though my limited time in handheld wasn't bad), excellent music, good character development if you put in the effort, and a plot that starts out interesting, sags a little in the first 1/3rd, then increasingly becomes better from the end of Chapter 2 onward for an amazing finale. Highly recommended! This is one of the best ARPGs I've played in recent memory.

Truly an action RPG fans dream. An enthralling story, phenomenal visuals, amazing cast of characters. A fight engine that boasts a free movement of combat as well as features that don’t overwhelm u all @ once unlike most titles in that genre. Truly an honorable successor to one of the greatest JRPG franchises that ever was

Had it crash 3 times on the raid missions, just overwhelmed the switch and froze up. It’s a wonderful amazing game but anywhere with grass looks horrible from the aliasing. But the game is so good I put up with it.

Didn't use it yet cuz I'm finishing older 1 befor I'm in love with this game series and will try to enjoy it from start to end

I had never played any entry in the Ys series until I recently found this game. At it's core, the game is a hack and slash action jrpg, but it has some gameplay modifiers that change some things up. As a result of playing this game I have started going back to the earlier entries in the series and completing all those as well.

Das Spiel ist toll und die Insel erkunden ist ein unglaublich tolles Gefühl. Auch wenn die Karte absolut grottig ist. Aber der Rest stimmt. Musik, story, charaktere, Dana, alles ist toll. Auch wenn ich einen guide nutzen musste. Aber mir hat das Spiel gefallen.
