can you buy the Star Wars and Disney designs included with the other machines?

Yes, you can buy those from the Brother store, as long as they are made for the machines hoop size. I was disappointed when I downloaded the Marvel pack, I figured I could pick the ones I wanted but it was a pack of already selected designs which I didn’t care for. Your best bet is to buy the non Marvel/Star Wars/Disney branded machine like the SE600 and get the designs you want. The “bonus designs” is a download pack of preselected designs also that are not that great.

Heavy duty? Can it handle leather/kevlar/nomex (embroiding and sewing)

The Brother LB5000M can embroider a thickness of less than 2 mm (1/16 inch).

Does this machine sew as well as embroidery?

The LB-5000M will sew as well as embroidery.

The Brother LB5000M can not embroider hats.
