it should be fine as long as it is plugged into a GFCI protected outlet.

Does the name imply this serves other unique functions?

No its just sockets it doesn't pop up , You physically pull it up and push it down.

Are you sure the cut out is 2.95"? I have a 3" hole saw bit and it still looks small. I bought 2 of these to go through my granite top. $2500 if not.

I actually need to drill a 3 1/4" hole for mine. I can send you some pics of mine with the tape measure pictured so you can clearly see.
