5th Gen Dr Mom Professional Otoscope - Full-Size with Our Largest Lens, Complete with Batteries and Hard Travel Case

This is a LONG review from a 10yr+ CMA including; a review of this otoscope, my experience with this seller, tips and tricks, and my personal story how this changed my life and why I think you should buy this. First off, mine broke after 3 years and I went to buy another (cause I love it), and saw their lifetime warranty! One email was all it took to get a replacement (I included pictures, explanation, and order info). No questions asked and it was already in the mail before I even saw the response! After 3 years!!! Thank you Sally Jenkins❤️ If anything happens they’ve got your back! I researched like crazy and Dr. Mom is by far the best quality otoscope for your money. I bought this one and the 4th gen pocket one and keep one in the bathroom and one in our medicine cabinet. Great quality, the weight is comparable to a Doctor’s otoscope, but slightly less. Just one button and it gives a clear view of the ear drum. It’s easy to use (with practice) and I included some tips further down. It comes with one size of tips (standard I think) and they offer different sizes you can purchase separately, but standard works fine for most kids. And I appreciate the case has a slot for the batteries, this is great because it reminds you to take the batteries out when you store it. (I left mine in for years and they never leaked but I saw it’s not a covered repair and there is literally a slot for batteries so I’m taking them out now!) This has been very helpful with my (now) 6yr old and even family and friends! I’m a CMA and I appreciate not feeling like I’m going to tear my kid’s ear off just to peek at his ear drum with a flashlight. As a mom, being able to tell if you need to go to the doctor or not is a lifesaver! And protecting your kids from unnecessary treatments and antibiotics is priceless! HELPFUL ADVICE If you’re not used to looking in ears you have to pull the top of the ear back and sometimes away with one hand while holding the otoscope in the other. Watching a video can help. RECOMMEND •Practice on an adult and get yourself comfortable •practice with your child so they’re used to it. •if they’re nervous let them use it to look at your ear (durable enough for a kid to use) •I find it easier to do babies/toddlers laying down with someone cradling their head ~~~It’s important they’re familiar with you looking in their ear or it will be impossible when they’re sick. Just think about it, if their ear hurts and they see you getting ready to put a pointy object in there it’s gonna be a fight! If you gently coax them and remind them it’s painless and you’re just looking and not poking it can make things go much smoother. You’re still likely to be met with some resistance so it’s important you're comfortable handling this. After 10+ years of experience even MY OWN children put up a fight! They want “mom” to be comforting, not poking around where it hurts❤️ MY STORY AND WHY I BOUGHT THIS When my youngest was 3yrs old I thought he was going to need tubes in his ears. The ENT he was referred to wanted to see him during any active infection, and every single incident was just fluid (likely from allergies). After so many false alarms with the ENT, I decided to invest in my own otoscope and I was thrilled to find something I could easily afford. It’s perfect for my needs and I love the case! I feel like many doctors (NOT ALL) hardly even glance at kids ears, maybe they just feel obligated to prescribe antibiotics to appease angry moms🤷‍♀️. I always took him to be on the safe side because I could never get a clear view using the flashlight from my phone. Best of all I didn’t have to take him to the doctor anymore because I could clearly see for myself it wasn’t infected❤️ I wish hospitals taught new moms how to use one of these (not on the baby). Every mom would benefit having one of these. REMEMBER if you can’t tell or you’re not sure take them to a doctor, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. And if the eardrum is infected or red TAKE THEM. Ear infections require antibiotics.

A really fine unit. The light is not too bright to wash out the image you see on the magnifying lens, but allows you to clearly see the ear drum. It is well packaged with a high quality plastic case. My neighbor, a certified MD, used it to check my ear drums and found the unit to be as good as the professional units they have in her clinic. I like the C size batteries as they will last longer, and the case has a spot for both batteries to remind you to not store the unit with the batteries inside the unit. First class unit at a reasonable price. I would definitely buy this again.

I just received this otoscope today and I love it!!! I’m a pediatric RN and was still using my first otoscope (Coronet, from early 1980’s). I really liked my first otoscope but recently the light has been turning off in the middle of the ear exam. Very frustrating when you are examining children’s ears. I was going to get a Welch/Allen otoscope but hated to spend $300-600. The Dr Mom otoscope sounded good and I found lots of impressive reviews. I did not expect much from this scope since the price was so low. I was wrong. The glass viewing screen and bright light, makes viewing the eardrum very clear. It also keeps the color real. I definitely will recommend this product to my friends.

My daughter suffers from regular, reoccurring ottis media in both ears. So much so, she is scheduled to have tubes placed in both ears next week. Between teething pains, twisting/playing with her hair, and ear infections - it seems like she's always pulling on her ears. I don't want to assume it's an infection and drag her to the doctor every single time she pulls on them, but I also don't want to overlook an infection either. If I wait until she has a fever and is showing other obvious signs, then she ends up miserable and on multiple rounds of antibiotics. So, I thought this would be a great way to help me determine whether she's pulling on her ears because of an infection or fluid versus just being a toddler and touching them for other reasons. I loved the idea of the chart to help guide me as I've never used an otoscope before. The otoscope feels like it's high quality, the pictures are clear and very helpful, the case is great and sturdy to protect the otoscope - overall an awesome, high quality tool. However, if your child does not like it when the doctor looks in their ears or wiggles, squirms, and/or cries when the doctor uses this tool in the office, YOU WILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM at home. Just because I am her mother and she trusts me doesn't mean that she was any more willing to hold still and let me look in her ears. In fact, I think she was less patient with me since at the doctor she's generally feeling ill and is much less likely to put up as much of a fight. At home, it was impossible and I don't want to hurt her by jamming a scope in her ear as she's wiggling about. She's 15 months old, so perhaps you won't have the same issues with an older child. My husband tried too and had the same result. I never did get to see in her ears but I looked in my hubby's and he looked in mine. I could see his ear clear as day and the pictures that are included told me that his ear was perfectly healthy. So it does work and does give a clear, bright picture of the ear. It's just not going to be some miracle tool to assess your child's ear if they don't perfectly cooperate and hold still long enough to do it. I don't know why I expected that she would let me look in her ears with this and was disappointed when she wouldn't. Just don't expect too much from younger children or you will be disappointed as well. I'm going to keep it in case as she gets older it may come in handy. But, at this point, I have officially given up trying to use it on her.

Great product

I have owned several of these Dr. Mom otoscopes, including the original, third generation, fourth generation and now fifth generation. I am a physician and I keep these at home or for travel. And I give them away to friends. I have been happy with all of them. Now, having tried the fifth generation model I am quite impressed and I don’t understand how they can sell a nice quality product like this at such a reasonable price. I still have my original Welch Allen from medical school, which cost about 10 times as much. The light is a good color for examining the tympanic membrane. The image is clear. It runs on C batteries, which I like because I don’t have to worry if it’s charged or not when kids are visiting and they have an earache. The switch is much better than the cheap purple knock-off, which I regrettably bought. It even has a port for insufflation. It feels like a quality instrument, and I am looking forward to using it. Very handy to have around and well worth the money.

I am a pediatrician. I look in around 20 pairs of ears a day. I bought this otoscope to have at home so I can look in my child’s ears. It works well! LED lights really can wash out the colors of the ear drum, and this one didn’t have that problem. Is this better than my work Welch Allyn with the halogen light bulb? No- nothing is ever going to beat that. That otoscope is, however, ridiculously expensive. Is it better than the professional Welch Allyn with LED light and 2x zoom? In my opinion, yes. That one washes out the color of the eardrum too much. It is also better (though not a crazy amount better) than the pocketscope Welch Allyn. It is also bigger in size than the pocketscope Welch Allyn so something to consider if you’re planning on traveling with your otoscope. Lastly, it use a C batteries as opposed to AA batteries, which is a bit annoying. Thankfully, the otoscope does come with C batteries in the container. It also is better in terms of color and visualization ability than a camera otoscope. At least for me it’s too diffuse a light and awkward to manipulate with a screen and a toddler. It is also better than 2 cheaper ones I bought at CVS and on Amazon, respectively. Those two were so awful, I cannot believe they are allowed to be sold. I couldn’t, as a professional, see anything with them- the lights were too diffuse and bad quality LED with a blue cast. I cannot speak to the longevity of the product as I am reviewing it based on how it works for visualizing the eardrum. Given the price I am inclined to think this is a very good value. If you prize a smaller affordable otoscope I’d go with the pocket Welch Allyn. If you want the best visualization for the price I’d say this is the one for you!

Great invention to give parents peace of mind! The card it comes with for you to compare what you are seeing to the pictures and their diagnostics is extremely helpful!
