## Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER From the New York Times bestselling author of Atmosphere and Daisy Jones & the Six —an entrancing and “wildly addictive journey of a reclusive Hollywood starlet” ( PopSugar ) as she reflects on her relentless rise to the top and the risks she took, the loves she lost, and the long-held secrets the public could never imagine. “ Fascinating, emotional and will be hard to put down. For fans of Taylor Jenkins Reid, this is her best work yet.” —Associated Press Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now? Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career. Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ‘80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways. “Heartbreaking, yet beautiful” (Jamie Blynn, Us Weekly ), The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is “Tinseltown drama at its finest” ( Redbook ): a mesmerizing journey through the splendor of old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means—and what it costs—to face the truth.

Review: Fantastic read!!! - The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I really enjoyed this read! It was so entertaining learning about all seven of Evelyn’s husbands, but this book was nothing like what I expected it to be. It definitely gave me the WOW factor and surprised me in so many ways. I absolutely loved Evelyn’s personality. She was such a complicated, confident, and fascinating character, and I loved getting to know her throughout the story. The ending genuinely shocked me, especially finding out the real reason Evelyn wanted Monique to tell her story. I definitely did not see that coming! Overall, this was such an entertaining and emotional read, and I loved how everything came together in the end. Definitely a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me!
Review: Visceral, fervent, and indelible marks. - I knew this one was going to hurt. What a tragic story. That is at least what my chest tells me, my throat, and my puffy eyes. But is it really a tragedy, or life led by intentional decisions and leftover consequences? Evelyn Hugo, her name an “effect” and her presence, an “affect” you cannot escape. I do not see her as a victim or a survivor, but somewhere in between, and I sensed that almost immediately, especially when she insisted, she held no regrets (character development suggests otherwise), and that no sorrow be reserved for her. Riddled in a life of manipulation twisted in ambition, I felt an uneasy conflict growing as I read, watching her identity take form, while carrying the weight of what she endured. Something is lurking,g though, waiting to reveal itself. It’s your curiosity in the connection between the journalist Monique Grant (Journalist) and Evelyn Hugo. “When you are allowed to change your life, be ready to do whatever it takes to make it happen. The world doesn’t give things, you take things” (p.35). And here is an admiration, a pull that most definitely binds you to Evelyn, the lurking curiosity, and the reveal of secrets and sins. Scratch sins, I mean lies. “…you have to be willing to deny your heritage, to commodify your body, to lie to good people, to sacrifice who you love in the name of what people will think, and to choose the false version of yourself time and time again, until you forget who you started as or why you started doing it to begin with” (p.326). And yet, despite her certainty, her will to wish away any pity for those leftover consequences, a reluctant compassion stirred in me. Soft, remorseful, unavoidable - rising from a place in my heart I didn’t expect to be opened. She did hurt. She carried pain. She loved hard, and I cared too much to deny my feelings for all of what she felt. Reader beware - spoilers everywhere! A hard gulp and a pain in my chest emerge when Celia St. James is introduced. Here is where the ache, a feeling you wish to move on, but it is stubborn and remains present. “I have been married seven times, and never once has it felt half as right as this. I think that loving you has been the truest thing about me” (p. 349). Forbidden for its time and contradictions of sexuality in the entertainment industry; nonetheless, a true love story in which you dig deep and convince yourself that indeed there was a happily ever after. Right? But your body betrays you, and your feelings exhaust your cognitive thinking – what space will you lean into? “My love. My Celia. My soul mate. The woman whose love I’d spent my life earning” (p.351). Insert tissue box, tears flood. Am I reading a version of Great Expectations? How does the corrupting influence of wealth and ambition, the internal war between what is appearance and what is reality, the limitations of, but the significant lifeline loyalty has on another? Most importantly, love and rejection, and ultimately, the meaning of worth and sacrifice. There are so many wonderful thoughts, words tied together in elegance, lessons to be learned, and the inevitable grief that you will experience as the reader. “Sometimes reality comes crashing down on you. Other times reality simply waits, patiently, for you to run out of the energy it takes to deny it” (p. 134). Ev put an enormous amount of energy into a reality she wanted to control. It was almost as if she were at war with a destiny that was scripted to act out. “Tell everyone that I got it wrong. That I chose the wrong things most of the time” (358). Gut punch. You did the best you could, with what you had, with what you knew, at that very time. “Doesn’t it bother you…That all anyone talks about when they talk about you are the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo?” (p. 386). “No,” she told me. “…I think once people know the truth, they will be much more interested in (SPOILER)......" (p.385). I ran out of tissues!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ complex characters and nuanced story: nearly perfect
*by C***L on August 18, 2026*

I am a straight Cis-gender man but I admire and really enjoy the lgbtQ+ story this novel tells and it really does put things into historical perspective as a woman navigates wanting to climb her career in Hollywood while also dealing with things both lgbtq+ women and also just women have dealt with historically in the entertainment industry and beyond. the surprise ending was a little lousy, but I though all in all, this story make s a point to show complex, well-thought-out characters and complex relationships in a way you normally don't see. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because Monique's sections are written in the present-tense which is a huge pet peeve of mine for novels and narratives. If that doesn't bother you you can't do much better than this book, which deserves every bit of acclaim it has received.
