This is NOT just a kids toy!!
I got this for my brother who is a musician and also works in the music industry. He absolutely loves it. He had never seen one before yet was able to play it within minutes of having it out of the box. He lives 3 hours away but couldn't wait to get home so he could plug it into his amp and effects pedal. I have gotten him other instruments in the past and he has loved them all but this is the first one I, ve given him that he was actually excited to play. Great gift idea. I ordered the deluxe model which is larger in size. The classic model would be perfect for kids. And it's so simple to play anyone could play it without clearing the room. It sounds great too. Fantastic! Fun, affordable, SUPER easy and cute too. Would definitely buy this again.

An Absolute Fav
This Otamatone Deluxe Electronic is literally my baby! It’s so much fun to play with, and the sound is quirky and unique. The build feels solid for a toy of this kind, and it’s surprisingly easy to learn basic notes while still allowing for creative play. Whether for music practice, casual fun, or just showing off to friends, it’s a joy to use. I absolutely love it and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys playful, musical gadgets.

It is pretty much exactly as expected.
I recently saw an Otamaton in a music video ("High Hopes" by Walk Off the Earth). It reminded me somewhat of the Chinese ehru, so I got one (the "Deluxe" model). It is a bit challenging to play because the sound-producing strip is "fretless." Like a violin or trombone, you have to learn where to stop. No frets or markers to help. But I'm playing with it every day and learning. To answer some questions I had, that no one ever answered, there are three range settings: Low notes, medium notes, and high notes. On each setting, the "neck" covers more than 2 octaves, so playing in any key is easily done. On the higher notes on the "neck," the half steps are pretty close - closer than the width of my fingers, so I have to slide one finger (or roll it) rather than put another finger down. But that's not a complaint - just stating a fact. Overall, I give this a good rating. It's fun to mess with and I think I'll be able to incorporate it into some of my real musical activities. Oh, and it's good for annoying your significant other, too :-)

Part toy, part instrument, entirely fun!
Larger and louder than the standard Otamatone, the Deluxe adds playability and features for more serious use. I bought this both as something for my kids and I to enjoy and to use here and there in my own music. Anyone who's played violin or viola will pick this up instantly, as the hand positioning and technique translates directly. I had to dust off that corner of my knowledge that hasn't been touched since the '90s but I got up to speed pretty quickly. The headphone/line out jack is handy, but the "wah" effect doesn't come through because it's a physical effect created by the device's mouth and the speaker inside of it, so anyone hoping to record with it or play amplified might be disappointed by that. The three range settings work nicely. The touch strip has a range of just under two octaves. The ranges do have some overlap, and I estimate it has a total range of nearly five octaves. The build quality is solid, and it's nice that the included strap can be attached both guitar- and sax-style. I anticipate enjoying this for a long time.

Entertaining
One day when I had a friend over, I walked out of my room dramatically playing the Imperial March on the Otamatone. They were shocked, but not as much as I was when I realized they had never heard Darth Vader's theme in their entire life. But that's beside the point. It doesn't seem like it, but the deluxe version of the Otamatone is more than a toy; it's an actual, professional instrument. It can be difficult sometimes to play the exact note that you want, but you actually can produce specific notes on this. In case you're debating between the regular and the deluxe, having the three different octaves and the volume control are definitely good reasons to buy the deluxe. It's quiet enough to play at night without disturbing anyone, yet it can get fairly loud as well. Truly the most entertaining instrument that I've had the pleasure of playing. I was also impressed by the fact that I received it in less than 48 hours from the time I purchased it, since the seller I bought it from was only a few cities away from me. I don't know if that's common with every seller, though.

Higher quality than expected, responsive touch-strip
The Otamatone Deluxe is NOT a children's toy (unless the child is one of those unusual ones who is careful with their toys and their friends). If your child has any remnant of "hulk smash", ninja-sword slash, caveman bash-type of energy left in them, this is NOT an appropriate gift as they will break it very, very quickly. That said, if you're reasonably mature and careful, this instrument feels well-made enough to last for years of occasional noodling. The touch-strip is pleasingly responsive and does not require too much pressure to play. Pitch-wise, the note spacing is not linear, but rather wider at the top and tighter at the bottom end of the strip, similar to a stringed instrument. If you have large fingertips, you may have trouble playing in tune near the bottom end of the strip, especially in the mid- and high-range settings. Sounds ugly to many but I love it. Once you learn to play with expression, it is far more tolerable for haters and enjoyable for music geeks and other lovers. I'd love to hack it to add CV pitch output -- haven't broken it down but if it's the same analogue circuitry as the original, I see no reason it couldn't be done.

Unique little instrument!
Fun and silly instument! No idea how to actually play it myself, but will make a fine gift for a family memeber with musical ability. I tried it out, to make sure it works and it seems to play pretty well.It has volume control and has a switch for pitch control. MInd, it doesn't play chords, just one sound ata glide. Easy enough for a child to play. Seems pretty sturdy, well made. Arrived over night, so no complaints there! Oh, came with a strap, and batteries. Not a bad buy!

Otamatone: Deluxe (White)
A fun, quirky instrument with a splash of character! The Otamatone isn't the easiest instrument to play but like anything, if you have the dedication and make the effort to learn then you can play a variety of tunes. I mainly got this as décor with the intention of entertaining guests should they want to give it a go (it does bring a lot of laughs and a couple of my musician friends seem to love playing with it). It produces a unique and interesting sound that either you'll love or find really annoying. I would definitely advise looking online for Otamatone content before committing to purchase; though I assume most people looking at this product are here because of just that. Personally, I love mine, even if I'm not great at playing it.
