Amazed!
I purchased two Samson Resound VX8.1 units with the intention to use for mobile DJ and live musician performances ... small to medium venues with 100 - 200 people. Wanted a set up to replace conventional box speakers and speaker stands. I've only been able to test it in my apartment and could not push the volume as high as I'd like. But, I really like what I hear and I'm anxious to try them out at a real gig. Here are my Likes and Dislikes (in no particular order).LIKES:* All wood construction. Yes, heavier then plastic, but, the tone is warm and natural. Love it.* Sound quality is amazing! Freq. response is said to be 40Hz - 20kHz. Lows, mids, and highs are well-balanced. I don't feel there are any voids or drop-outs in the frequency spectrum. I, usually, like my subs to come down to about 30Hz where you can "feel" the bass in your chest. The Samson sub doesn't provide this. But, it does provide a stiff "punchy" bass that you might not "feel" ... but, you can definitely hear it.* Very stealthy and attractive design. Unlike box speakers on stands, these do not block view of audience to the far left and right of stage.* The 3-section arrays have carved out finger holds for safe handling. The subwoofer section, also, has carved out handles.* Price. Considerably lower than similar counterparts (Evolve 50, TurboSound IP2000, JBL EON One, Yamaha Stagepas 1K).* Durable build quality. The splatter paint finish hides scratches / scuffs and can be easily touched up. Durable rubber feet eliminates movement. Pill design grill on all sections is nice and thick and doesn't cave in.* I like the positive "click" you hear when assembling the array sections. Unlike the plastic friction fit competition, you know when the Samson arrays are properly secured.DISLIKES:* Very heavy (approx. 65 lbs.). This is NOT a system that is lightweight and going to be carried into a gig. Best to use a cart. Even the 3-section arrays in its carry bag is a bit too heavy to sling over your shoulder.* The array sections containing the mid / high frequency drivers are situated quite low (between 3' - 6'). If placed at ground level, this might make it hard to cut through a standing audience (dance floor) and any other obstacles in order to achieve farther throw / distance. I suppose this is the compromise for having eight 3.5" array drivers. But, if elevated on a stage or small speaker risers, this could be overcome.* Disassembling the array section is a bit difficult. Once they are "clicked" in securely, it is challenging to detach them from each other. Would've liked some sort of release button. However, after trying different ways of safely separating the sections, I found that wiggling the sections in a twisting motion released them much easier.* If you plan to use one of these as a stand-alone system for a soloist, duo, or trio ... the mixer section is a bit lacking. Would've liked EQ, Reverb, 3.5mm input, and maybe a master volume. But, I think the price justifies the "bare minimum" mixer. This is not a big issue for me as I purchased two of these with the intention to control it from an external mixer.OVERALL IMPRESSION:The Samson Resound VX8.1 doesn't have the bells and whistles or the flash that the others have. But, the price is right for someone who is looking for a great sounding compact array system that provides the bare basics. I think the value for the buck on this is perfect and spot on. Nice work, Samson!

Thoroughly Happy
For years, I have used strictly QSC or EV PA speakers for DJing events. In a bind, I need another set up and was able to quickly acquire the Samson Resound VX8.1. I had been looking at the system a while and was curious as to how the array sounded compared to others. I'm here to say, I was impressed. I now personally take this with me when I'm out on a gig. Almost perfect! Still suggest having an external mixer with decent eq capabilities with you.
