Good book but only has certain areas highlighted in Japan
Good book but only has certain areas highlighted in Japan, not comprehensive of the country. Informative and helpful on the areas it does cover.

The Lonely Planet series is usually excellent.
Seems to be what I needed for my upcoming trip to Japan. The Lonely Planet series is usually excellent.

I think this book provides some good information, but it lacks depth
We had only 2 weeks to plan our 14 day Japan vacation, this book was the one we tried to base some of our suggested itineraries off. Once we got into the country, we realized that the book missed some of the off the beaten path places and shrines. We ended up using tripadvisor and other websites to see and read what really was happening in the different cities where we were traveling and see festivals and understand the weather etc.. I think this book provides some good information, but it lacks depth. The book gives you a few ideas and things to try, but doesn't go further beyond those and really fell short of what I expected would be explained/covered in the book. I would possibly try pairing this with another guide-book or possibly using some travel websites.

Took it with me everywhere I went!
I had booked a trip to Japan knowing what cities I was going to hit, but having no idea what to do when I got there. This book was perfect for helping me plan out my days. I followed the "Four Days in Tokyo" itinerary and enjoyed all of the recommendations. Likewise in each city. Don't know what I would have done without this book!

Not as comprehensive as I would have liked
Having lived in Japan almost 12 years ago and possibly moving back there this summer, I was looking for a guide to give me some new updated info and new ideas for traveling with a child. As much as I normally love Lonely Planet, I felt this guide was lacking. Nothing much beyond the well beaten path here. Good information but wasn't what I was looking for.

Great book! Very thorough and handy to have if you aren't a hundred percent sure of what cities you will be going to while in Japan. We had a little extra time to travel around outside of Tokyo and Kyoto and the book was very helpful in our planning.

Well received!
I'd read online that this was a good reference for people who are considering a trip to Japan. Since my son is hoping to teach there, I bought it for him and he said it was a very good guide and gave him information he hadn't already found online.

could be better, could be more helpful
could be better, could be more helpful, all it is instead of a travel guide, is a "oh look this is what japan is", instead of "go here, great things to see, start by taking train a to train b then walk along here only in the afternoon b/c of the sun", nope just boring info.

Compact and Useful for First Short Trip to Japan
Small, compact and therefore handy guide. It provides a good overview of highlights of Japan and a few nice itineraries at the front.I would say it is good enough if you are only visiting the highlights and for 1 to perhaps 2 weeks tour. However if you intend to go longer and be more adventurous, then this is not quite sufficient. You would need to get a more comprehensive guide.

I like that it was full of pretty photos
So helpful for my trip to Japan. I like that it was full of pretty photos. The pull out map of Tokyo was pretty useless though (only covered a very small section).
