Deluxe SPQR

Great game. Takes some time to learn but once you do, good stuff.

The game is amazing. However, there was no protective packaging inside the box, so the box of the game was damaged - luckily none of the components were affected.

SPQR is a fairly complicated boardgame which aims to re-create some of the greatest battles of the Roman Republic.Among the battles included are the epic clashes with Hannibal's Carthaginians at the Trebbia, Cannae, and Zama, and even the 3 principal battles fought with the Greek King Pyrrhus of Epirus, namely Heraclea, Ausculum, and Beneventum. Needless to say, the above scenarios are my favorite, though there are approximately a dozen more to choose from.The rulebook is lengthy but thorough and well-written. It will take some time to get used to, but boy, once you've learned the system, it's a real blast. I'd recommend SPQR to any Ancient history and/or gaming fan who has the time and is willing to sit down and work with the rulebook. I have played about 15 battles in the series (Great Battles of History Series; yes, there are other games that play just like SPQR!) and still can't get enough.It's a shame that wargames such as this are slowly going out of style, because they are immensely enjoyable, more often than not even more so than video games. SPQR's counters, or playing pieces, are wonderful to look at, as they are very nicely illustrated, so the aesthetic appeal is definitely there.There's just something about lining up your army made up of skirmishers, light infantry, heavy phalanxes, elephants, celtic lancers, numidian cavalry, and and and (!!!) opposite your Roman opponent's on an ancient battlefield map that just brings me back to SPQR again and again!

Is this price a typo or is the seller hoping that someone mistakenly hits 1-click ordering? Classic ancients tactical war-game. Can find copies lightly used or pre-order a re-print from GMT games for less than $100.
