Annapolis Soundtrack

I first became interested in Brian Tyler's work through the TV mini series "Children of Dune" (2003). The music for this show was outstanding and "Inama Nushif (Montage)" is one of favorite pieces by far. I also am a big fan of his music for the TV cartoon series "Transformers: Prime" (2010-13). His work for the film "Frailty" (2001) really helped to get him recognized and start him on the road that would eventually have him scoring films for some of the biggest blockbusters ever. Every now and then, I'll come across some of his older work at a really good price and pick it up, which is the case here for the particular score for the movie "Annapolis" (2005).I've always enjoyed military themed scores like Goldsmith's "Patton" and James Horner's "Glory". Military drums, sweeping music filled with patriotism, and big explosive crescendos always make the hairs on my arms stand up when I am watching films like these. Tyler begins the score with the main theme that does just that. "Annapolis" (track 1), sets the tone for the movie with all the musical ingredients that cooks up the pride, strength, history, and dignity of the US Naval Academy. The theme sticks with you and Tyler refers to it often throughout the score especially during some of the more emotional scenes within the movie. A lot of sports movies like to do the same thing and Tyler manages emotional musical manipulation quite well within those moments in the story. It's a story that has been told many times obviously. Guy with problems, has a dream, faces challenges to reach goal, finds nice looking girl, eventually conquers dream....and gets the girl. Tyler's score weaves throughout the story providing all of the emotional elements needed to enhance every moment.Tyler provides plenty of training music throughout and it's here that you'll find the music shift into a precursor of "The Fast and Furious". Tracks like "Progression" (4), "Tank Drill" (12), "Brigade Training" (16), and "Math Problems" (24) are just a few examples. These are high energy tracks full of electronics and drum machines that amp up the action quite a bit. These particular tracks fit nicely into these moments in the movie where we see the characters going through the rigorous training needed to be successful. Tyler slows things down and uses an electric guitar when the story focuses on the main character's (Jake) home life. Examples of this are "Jake" (9) and "Holiday Leave" (26). The slower, sliding, almost bluesy guitar and drums seems to help identify the character's humble origins. These musical bits are not necessarily sad, but do tend to help you connect with a character who definitely has gone through some tough times. There are times within the score where you'll hear Tyler insert this guitar into more emotional moments either playing the main theme or becoming a part of it such as in "The Offer" (13). This particular instrument seems to act as a bridge between Jake's past and his objective of being successful at the Naval Academy.I tend to be more of a fan for the cues where Tyler plays with the main theme either through the budding romance of Jake and Ali or through the emotional pride of the academy itself. One of my favorite tracks is "Annapolis Finale" (29). Tyler really hits the military percussion hard at the end of this one and I always crank it up on that part. "Annapolis End Title" (30) is the closing track that gives you a combo of the training music which eventually hands it over to a more robust orchestra playing the main theme.The CD version of this score is released through Varase Sarabande Records and contains 30 tracks giving you 1 hour and 5 minutes of music. The CD contains an 8 page insert with mostly black and white photos from the movie and credits for the orchestra members. It's a great early score for Tyler and I recommend!

This a must-buy CD for Brian Tyler fans - dramatic and intense. You'll feel the film's drama through this score.

By far, the best work done by Brain Tyler...The soundtrack in this film is soo amazing u feel the music and the energy is amazing from it....I bought this CD not to long now and can tell u am 100% impressed.....wicked stuff....go out and buy it or itunes a copy....my personal fav track is 16-Brigade Training...i love to lsten to it and work out...makes u feel u'r in the movie training as well
