Love this book!
I had this book as a child and it was one of my favorites. I got it to read to my daughter and she loved it to! It is a great book for dog lovers. It has a nice lesson about making things right when you make mistakes. I highly recommend this book.

Without exception the best kids’s book ever. An emotional rollercoaster of longing, freindship, failure, redemption, and triumph
This is, without exception or exaggeration, the greatest children’s book of all time. It has everything. Longing, joy, loss, failure, fear, heroics, redemption, true friendship, and literal life and death struggles. All revolving around a dog who just wants to make his boy happy. Our story opens with a good dog, Duke, who has been wrongly condemned to the worst pet shop in history. He bemoans his lonely life; his only wish is that someone will love him. Anyone. Then enter Sammy Brown who saves our Hero from a life on that cold stone floor. Our emotions swing upward as Duke is moved to a large farm where he has room to run and play, and his own house! Not only that but the next day a whole pack of dogs come to play with Duke! That’s right: cold stone floor to playing in the field with a whole pack of new friends in one page! The book is jammed packed, fast paced, action from start to finish.Things quickly take a turn for the worse! Then better. Then WAY worse. Then WAY WAY worse. Then amazing happy. I don’t want to spoil the Amazing twists and turns of this book but it will have you and your child gasping and worrying. But in the end, I promise, you will be cheering for Duke and Sam.In a few words and pages Al Perkins shows us the full range of emotions and teaches us about the struggles of life and the importance of never giving up on your goals or your friends. And the importance of using our gifts and talents to help those around us.The people who gave this book a 1 star rating are obviously cat people who have no appreciation for great literature. These people do not deserve a farm and a house but should be left in the pet shop window on a cold stone floor, doomed to never know the joy of digging in the soft dirt .

Beginner readers
As a reading teacher, I have found there is certainly some value in this book written in the 1960 era. It uses repetition and allows an element of prediction to occur in the most basic reading experience. I used this with my own children when they were emerging readers (4-5 years old) and have purchased it as one of the beginner books for my grandchildren at their parents request.

Wonderful book for children and adults!!
I am 72 years old and just bought a copy of this wonderful book for myself. My husband and I read it to our two daughters (now grown with their own children), and we have loved it for all these years. They each have their own copies and I just had to have a copy for myself. I also now buy this book as baby gifts for friends and family who are having their own children!! There is a wonderful message in this book obviously for small children, but adults can learn many lessons as well. If more people would use the lessons taught in this book, the world would be a better place! Please get a copy for you and your family! You won't regret it.

A great story.
This is a storybook with wonderful illustrations, I bought it for my four-year-old cousin's birthday, he is already reading, and thought this would be good to add to his library. My only complaint is the book came damaged because there was no packaging in the oversize box. I didn't have time to exchange it before his party.

Perfect Baby Gift
My favorite book growing up. Made my parents read it so much I had it memorized and could “read it” before I could read. I give it as a baby gift to everyone and it’s always a sweet moment.

great book
Das allerdings nur bedingt für den Englischunterricht geeignet, da sprachlich relativ schwer. Allerdings auch ein toller Klassiker der englisch-sprachigen Kinderliteratur.

Digging est dog!
My mom read us this book and it was a hand me down from our cousins. I had to get it for my own little guy. The dog that can't dig, then doesn't stop digging!Lots of rhymes too. A favourite is 'slowly, slowly down they came, each for part of a long dog chain'
