Gaiwans are used to brew tea in the traditional style of the Chinese Gongfu Tea Ceremony. Several successive brews of the tea are combined in a "fairness pitcher," (not included) which serves to average-out the several brews into a "fair" mixture. The tea is then poured from the fairness pitcher into tea cups (also not included). Alternatatively, tea can be drunk directly from the gaiwan, the lid used both to keep the tea warm and as a strainer to block the tea leaves during consumption. The dimensions of the gaiwan are 3.5 inches high and 3 5/8 inches wide. This is a large gaiwan that holds about 5.75 ounces of tea to lid level. Perfect when brewing for two or more persons.

Quite Nice
This is a lovely little Gaiwan. As someone new to gong fu style brewing I wasn't ready to invest in anything too expensive and this was a nicely decorated set. So far I've really enjoyed using it. It does get a bit hot for brewing herbals that require a higher temperature but I've had no issues brewing white, green, and black. As far as the size this is what I expected as gong fu brewing is done in smaller volumes. It arrived on time. Over all a lovely set.
