RootsMagic 6 Family Tree Genealogy Software / Book Bundle

I was very happy with my purchase. I had been using the free version to see how I liked it after using an older version of Family Tree Maker. I was thrilled to learn that I was able to easily upload my database from Family Tree Maker directly to RootsMagic. I decided that I would like to use some of the features that were not included with the free version so bought the software and the book. I like having the book to give me tips about the different aspects of this software. I've been using FamilyTreeMaker for more than 10 years so it's been a learning process to get used to the way RootsMagic does things, but I know the more I use it the easier it will get. The only thing reason I took off a star is that a week after I bought RootsMagic 6 I get an email from the company saying that RootsMagic7 is out and I can upgrade for just $29.95 which is what I just paid for RootsMagic 6. I feel that the upgrade should cost less than the price of the original since they are just adding a few new features. Needless to say, I will not be upgrading at this time.

From other reviews, I decided to buy the bundle and am glad I did. Although it is intuitive once you start using it, the book came in handy at the very beginning. It was also useful in helping me figure out how to correct mistakes I made. I wish it provided a box chart structure for viewing for descendants like Family Treemaker, but with the Gedcom export, which I have already tested, I will most likely buy Family Treemaker just for that viewing feature. I also wish that it allowed printing the documents you can link to a family member (Word documents, .pdfs, such as typed or scanned letters, etc.), but perhaps that is beyond any software product. I have entered several hundred people so far and find navigating between them easy. RootsMagic has built a great support system with many detailed videos available to view and a message board that was responsive to my question. Overall, I'm very happy with RootsMagic.

I had purchased this genealogy program because of its high ratings. I have always used Family Tree Maker. I imported my FTM into Roots Magic 6 and "most' of it imported just fine, but I lost most of my notes and media. It is a bit harder to understand but it seemed to be a program that if someone started with it they would love it. I could not use this for my family tree, but I still would recommend it to others needing to begin in some genealogy program. This company was easy to work with when I emailed them about my problem and they were very prompt in refunding my money. I had to pay return postage, but did it without complaint because I was thankful they accepted the return back. It is truly a good program and has so many good points about it.

I've always used Family Tree Maker software for my genealogy research. But I read the reviews on RootsMajic 6 and saw several demos of it by a friend of mine so I decided to make the change. It has been a challenge in the sense that I have to learn the location of where to enter information. (Old habits die slowly.)The great thing about this software is how easy it was to move my FTM info to RootsMajic and it didn't change a thing. Also it has a timeline that once you have entered your information you can see movement of your ancestors through time. Another great part of it is that you can go to online websites without leaving your work. I would recommend that you buy the book that goes along with RootsMajic 6.

This review is for RootsMagic with the book. The book is extremely helpful, is heavy on illustrations and has many good tips on using the software. Definitely worth getting.I used to use Family Tree Maker but found it buggy and that program didn't like my interrelated family connections at all. (Neither does Ancestry.com)Rootsmagic has no trouble linking my complex ancestor relationships. Further it has many more options and fields than you could ever want to use. Once you get used to it, it is easy to fill in. The video tutorials are good.The one DRAWBACK to this product is that while it will let you search in various outside websites like Ancestry.com directly through the software, it does not intuitively copy that found information into your tree like Family Tree Maker does. You have to do that manually by cut and paste.If you have an Ancestry family tree you can download it into a GEDCOM file and transfer the information easily into this program, either person by person or with relationships intact.Glad I bought this!

I've used Family Tree maker for several versions and really like how easy it is to navigate around in it, but I found it lacking in how it handled sources.So I wanted to try Roots Magic. I like the improved sources handling, but a part of me still misses the layout and updated look of FTM. That being said, Roots Magic allows you to make your own source template (or import ones that other have made)and even has the ability to describe a source as original or derivative, then the information as primary or secondary and finally the evidence as direct, indirect or negative Overall, I'm glad I got RM as I think it will help me make sure my sources are in order.

I'm trying to save money, and have been using Ancestry.com for years, but wanted to cancel my subscription and was wanting all the info off the site. With no faith at all I purchased this and it totally recorded everything after a little bit of effort in using the GEO con or whatever it's called, you click on the "download" thing off of Amazon.com home page, it stores it in a funky way, and you download the program of RootsMagic, INPUT the data off your computer that you saved from Amazon, and Wa La. . .you can read it nice a clear on the downloaded program on RootsMagic with all sorts of options for printing off charts and stuff. It would be nice if the pictures downloaded too, however, I'm tired of downloading pictures too and this just makes it easier w/o all that extra stuff. I just want the data and there are some clever ways of displaying it on this database.
