Using these to provide a NAS to my home network - good drives!
I love these drives. I have two of them which I am using to provide a mirrored NAS to my stacks of Raspberry Pi computers. So far they're working flawlessly in this capacity. They are providing home and log directories to my collection of Raspberry Pi. Response is quick and the data transfer rates are acceptable. My only complaint is that they take a bit of time to wake on access, so they aren't available to fsck and mount on boot, but this is more of an issue because of the way I'm using the drives. I have mirroring set up because I've killed more than my share of external drives by using them in always-on configurations; I want to keep my data around even if I lose one of the drives. The cases are aesthetically pleasing to look at. It is certainly pleasant to have something other than black and silver in my computer area. The cases feel good when handling them; they have a pleasant tactile presence. They are glossy, but not slippery which would cause a risk of dropping them. If you're going to cart yours around, I would recommend both the edge protector kit, which isn't too expensive, and a good case to avoid shock-damaging the drive or scratching that nice enclosure.

Great external hard drive, simple to setup and very reliable.
Great external hard drive, simple to setup and very reliable. Have always relied on WD external drives to back up video footage, photos and other types of work. Have had a couple other brands of external drives fail on me, but have had great luck with WD. The USB 3.0 is way faster and a nice upgrade over the USB 2.0. Think the only problem I've had is one faulty cord and that may have been user error. Great drives and simple to use and setup and keep your stuff safe.

True WD Blue
For some reason I thought this was metal, it's not. It's a shiny blue plastic plate, then the other 3/4 of it, is black plastic. It DOES NOT require a power supply. It is 2TB, and it is USB 3.0. It runs super fast, and doesn't get hot or vibrate off the table or anything. It has 4 little rubber feet on the bottom of it. It's a great drive to have just to backup to, or stick a bunch of movies on - to take to a friends house. I even ran Linux on it, and had it almost like a secondary PC - for when Windows inevitably crashes, you still can pull up the PC, print, get documents off the PC hard drive, etc. I recommend having one of these, nice little portable lifesaver.

One of the Top 5 Computer Purchases I've Ever Made.
I, at least, remember when 20MB drives cost five times as much (well, if it comes to that, I remember the days before 20MB drives for personal computers!) Now we have access to a 2 *million* megabyte drive for (gasp) *less than $100*. If you need to be convinced of the value of such a thing, you are (no offense meant), a *loony*. All seriousness aside: Western Digital is arguably the premier disk drive maker in the world. Their drives are incredibly reliable; I've had two of their larger drives for over 5 years now without a single problem. The My Passport series is robust, fast, trouble-free, and overall an incredible value for the money. The available space is ridiculously large. The most "hard drive" space you can get in a Mac is 1 TB, which means that you can back up approximately *2 Macs* onto this one drive. Considering that you're probably not using most of your computer's hard drive space, and you wouldn't back up all of it anyway, this drive is an excellent (and portable backup solution). In closing, I can confirm that this drive works seamlessly with Time Machine (for backups) and Lightroom (for managing photos).

WD 2 TB Drive - Good Enough!!
I just received my Western Digital (WD) Passport Ultra, 2 TB; delivery in 2 days. First, let me mention that prior to purchase I posted a question here at Amazon as to whether the drive comes with the little zipper case. I got one reply that said yes, it does not! Now, let me be honest, when you follow the purchase options in Amazon, when I saw that there was a suggestion to purchase a case for $5, well, that was my clue, so really, I knew the answer but I thought I would ask. So two thoughts, hey folks, don't answer questions you don't know the answer to! Next, I think the fact that it doesn't ship with a case is the fault of Western Digital. Tacky tacky tacky. I always thought it was classy when the drive arrived with the case. So if you read more, you will see, I have a case I can use. I have been buying these WD drives for years (and I used to be a big Seagate fan) I have about six of them and every single drive came with a zipper case! Why six (over time....)? I buy them in pairs, off-site / on-site backup rotation. The first pair I bought were 160 GB, I thought I was in heaven, a thousand times better than any other backup media I had ever used before and, they are all still fully functional today. I have never had any of these WD USB external drives fail. Drives fail, I've had lots of drive failures over the years, but these have not. So, I have 160 GB, 320 GB, 1 TB and now 2 TB. Since I already have the WD software installed, it was plug and play, but the software install is a breeze, and works well. As a result of several OS upgrades, I have installed the WD software many times. Today, Costco has some Seagate drives that appear very similar to these WD drives, BIG difference. The Seagate drives don't have encryption and password protection (not 100% sure but…) so both my history of years using these WD drives and the encryption / password protection, and a pretty good price point, a good deal. One more thing, fast drives, these are not. I have a utility that measures the speed, even this brand new drive, 2 TB drive, 5200 rpm, boring. But that's why they're so inexpensive, if they were 10,000 rpm, they would cost a lot more.

Fast, Affordable - can't beat it for the price!
I have bought 10+ passport drives since they came out. I've only had one fail on me and it was because of an accidental drop. This is my first 2TB drive. Usually I buy the 1TB model. What's weird is I did a speed test with this drive and compared it to my 1TB drive. With the others, they max out at about 60 MB/s. With this one - for whatever reason - it r/w at about 100 MB/s. That's pretty great. Another solid drive, WD!

Failed
Bought this a little while ago and didn't open it right away. When my other backup was getting full, I opened this one and started using it for backing up my photos. Used it for about 2 months and am now unable to get into the hard drive at all, and troubleshooting turns up others that have had this issue. Thankfully I back up to two locations, so I didn't lose everything, just a few days worth of work that I will have to do. I have Several Seagate drives that have safely stored my photos - will not risk buying another Passport.

Western Digital is all I buy
I like it very much, this isn't the first Western Digital that I have purchased. I always buy Western Digital and this time was no different. This is my 3rd portable drive. My first WD drive, I purchase many years ago and it is still going strong. I trust Western Digital. In addition to the 3 portable, I have 3 externals drives and a network all Western Digital. I belong to an organization for which I need to protect the documentation I done, my Family Tree with many years of documentation, plus, my hobby is photograph, so I backup to at least 2 drives and the network. I purchased this one because it is small, 2TB, so I can easily take it with me, wherever I go. It is a good buy. The one thing I don't do, which I should, is to store one some where else. I need to start doing that!
