Edouard Manet

This is a solid introduction to the extraordinary and complex art created by Edouard Manet. The narrative is flat but informative. Excellent use is made of archival material as well as film created at locations where Manet painted. A 3 disc set on "Impressionism" contains (disc 2) a far more lively and interesting treatment of Manet but the disc reviewed here offers additional materials.

This fine documentary evokes 19th century Paris as a backdrop to its exploration of Manet and his rebellion against the preceding neo-classical style. It shows how Manet, while not an Impressionist himself, paved the way for that movement. Excellent narration. (The same film was previously issued under the name "Les Silences de Manet".)

If you love the work of Manet as much as I do (or, really, even if you've never heard of him), this is a fabuous documentary. You also get to see the France that he saw. If you liked "Midnight in Paris," you'll love this.

Manet, what more need to be said. An excellent documentary detailing the life of the GrandFather of Impressionism.

Die deutschen Ausgaben haben die Altersangabe vorne auf dem Cover aufgedruckt und den Aufkleber 3 bzw. 4 Sprachen/Languages ebenso vorne und sind häufig etwas höher im Preis. Jahrhunderts.Zu Hause im Großbürgertum und befreundet mit "Zola" und "Baudelaire", wandte er sich von der Historienmalerei zunehmend Szenen des urbanen Lebens zu. Ein Leben lang sehnte er sich nach Anerkennung, doch Werke wie " Frühstück im Freien" und "Olympia" lösten nur heftige Skandale aus. Das Bild "Nana" mußte sogar aus dem Salon entfernt werden. Provokante Momentaufnahme des Alltags, häufig von Frauen, schienen zudem nur halbfertig gemalt. Dem Maler des Unsichbaren und der Stille spürt der Film von "Didier Baussy-Oulianoff" nach.Er kontrastiert das Werk Manets mit der Kunst der Zeitgenossen, das geheimnisvolle Schweigen seiner Figuren mit der lärmenden Betreibsamkeit der Epoche. Er zeichnet somit das Portrait eines Mannes, der künstlerisch mit allen Konventionen bricht, gesellschaftlich aber nach Bestättigung sucht, die ihm aber erst nach seinem Tod 1883 erfuhr.Erst 1907 ging die "Olympia" in den Besitz des Louvre über, ihr Platz ist heute im Pariser "Musee d`Orsay".(Q : Texte auf der DVD Rückseite und im Booklet "Kristina Tieke")

A better film about Manet than the one I bought at the RA show last year. Puts him in perspective but a little short on details. Also frequently the film is so dark that e.g. The black maid's face is almost missing, hats dissapear into the murk and although on the menu screen the girl at the bar of the Follies is red brown when talking about her it is black.

A voir et à revoir pour parfaire sa culture sur Manet. Toujours agréable de revoir les tableaux que l'on connait, de découvrir ceux que l'on connait moins.
