Tilly and the Buttons: Make It Simple: Easy, Speedy Sewing Projects to Stitch Up in an Afternoon

I bought this book to give me some help to dip my toe in the world of sewing. My second garment attempt was the Safiya trousers ( only made a super simple skirt before) they were a success and the tips to change the length etc were really useful being a short lady! I was hooked having had the book less than a week I’ve also made the Suki dress, I got a little bit scissor happy and cut my pattern too small- inspired by all the garment hacks I decided that I was capable of making some adjustments myself and created a beautiful colour block sleeve Suki top! The Juno sleep mask is also so very cute and I’m about to make a few as gifts for my family! Thanks Tilly- a really great book with simple instruction and personalisation ideas to make every garment your own. Definitely worth purchasing for a complete beginner. Really takes all the difficult jargon and makes it understandable.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of learning to sew their own clothes. The patterns are great, I have made the Safiya trousers, dungarees and playsuit and the Suki dress so far and all fit fantasticly whilst being simple to make. The step by step photo instructions are so helpful, as is the first section of the book while explains the terms etc Before this book I'd managed to take up my own curtains and make a simple tote bag. Now it has given me the confidence that I can sew my own wardrobe! Thank you to Tilly & the team for this fantastic book. I'll definitely be buying the others 😊

I've always wanted to be able to sew, I've tried a few times with youtube videos and homemade patterns but never made anything truly wearable. I treated myself to this book on pre-order and it's the best book I've ever brought. I've already made the safiya dungarees and had the confidence to change the pattern to add in buckles and pockets and am now waiting on some fabric to make the wrap dress and jumper. I was slightly worried that there wouldn't be enough patterns to fit my own style but the making it your own sections give you so many ideas for customisation and altering the patterns. I'm planning on ordering another copy of my mother in law for her birthday and plan to get all the other Tilly and the Buttons books for my birthday! I really would recommend this book if you want to gain some confidence in sewing with simple easy to follow instructions.

Absolutely love this book, the pictures are wonderful and the instructions are clear. Each of the projects in it will be welcome staple additions to my wardrobe, and I'm excited to play around with the alterations she suggests in the book; such as making a playsuit out of the culottes. I haven't made anything from this one yet but I have out of her previous two and they have all come out brilliantly. In a way I wish this one had come out first because the projects seem much more (as the book suggests) simple! What is great about the projects in this one though, is that they do not take forever to make. There's nothing worse than working on the same project for days/ weeks/ months because it's so long-winded or fiddly. Looking forward to a bit of self-care/ mindfulness time on my own with this book and machine. Thanks Tilly!

I’ve really enjoyed this book so far. I love the time batching as it gives me a guide and breaks it up into manageable chunks when I’m feeling it’s difficult to get started. The construction of the cardigan is interesting and great to make! Great staple pieces that are satisfyingly quick. I expect if you are brave and adventurous you could get creative and adapt the pieces. This is the book for the beginner, the person with less time, the ‘harder to get motivated’ and the pro who can make it quick and get creative. It’s a lovely book. Thank you Tilly!

I love this book! I bought it to learn how to follow patterns and make clothes from patterns. I have made clothes for a few years but wanted to learn properly and this book has been a great start. I have already made one of the garments from the book and I plan to make them all at some point. The instructions are simple and I like the inclusion of shortcut instructions to use if you have already made the garment before. I would absolutely recommend this book and I plan to purchase Tilly’s other books.

I am a stone-cold newbie to sewing: I started learning a month ago. I saw some posts from other sewists on social media that highlighted that Tilly provides patters that are brilliant for beginners. I never in a million years would have said that a month after getting my machine out I would be buying fabric for my first attempt at dress making, but I am. The patterns are stylish and flattering (I think there is something for every shape) and the instructions are step-by-step and the nervousness of starting my fist dress is completely replaced by excitement. The book contains recommendations for what fabrics are best for each project and Tilly has also done “sew-alongs” if you need something visual. This is such a great book for beginners as it’s given me the confidence to just go for it!

This book is so easy to follow for a beginner. It has really clear photos of each step, and each project is quick and simple enough to do in one day/weekend. I really like being able to adapt and customize the patterns to what I need (e.g. making some elasticated trousers from the jumpsuit template). The templates are also really size inclusive so you can make projects for a wide range of sizes. Only small issue is that some of the pieces overlap on the pattern sheets, so tracing paper will come in handy.

Amazing book and it has a real size pattern with it. Suitable for beginner.

Let me start by saying that I am a Tilly fan and have her previous books. I find that a lot of the negative reviews tend to be from those who don't necessarily know her work/books. Tilly's books are delightful to all but her message has always been about bringing sewing to beginners. This book, in particular, is focused on simpler, more speedy projects that can be whipped up in an afternoon (or a couple of days, depending on how much time you have). Like her other books, there are all these nifty little details that can be used to personalize and upgrade each project. If you are more experienced and want to skip the explanation of the techniques, there is a nice little checklist for each project. When it comes to the style, I always recommend looking at the designer's instagram or website to get a feel of what their style is. Sometimes it is just not for me, so I do some browsing first (Instagram is great to look at what the patterns look like on other people) and then decide if I want to invest the money on that particular pattern/book. I am super pleased with this purchase and definitely can't wait to keep sewing with Tilly!

Adorei o livro. Ele está em inglês mas as instruções são claras e com várias fotos. Além disso os modelos são simples e bonitos, prefeito para iniciantes na costura. O livro também já vem com os moldes, cada um em um lado da folha, o que é muito interessante já que é fácil de copiá-los e seguir com a costura.

I was so excited to get this book and it didn't disappoint. Included are 6 patterns projects, all suitable for a beginner (or a seasoned sewer to get fancy with) and delightful tips and easy to follow instructions. One thing I really love is if you purchase the book, you can go online and download the print-at-home versions of the patterns for free. I immediately did that so I can leave the book patterns folded in the back. I have read comments online complaining about the patterns in the book being double sided. Yes, you will need to trace the patterns as they are double sided...but that is fairly common for patterns included with books. Or you can print at home like I did. :) All in all, a wonderful book! Even better...if you follow TillyButtons on Instagram, there is a sew-a-long for the Safiya trousers.
