Rayuela (Spanish Edition)

First of all, I want to emphasize that my review of “Rayuela” is of the "Edición conmemorativa" published by the Real Academia Española (Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial, SAU, 2019) and NOT of the "Edición de Andrés Amorós” (Catedra: Letras Hispánicas, 1984). It is abundantly clear that the reviews for these two editions are commingled in this Review Section. Therefore, it’s important to separate these reviews because it appears that the positive reviews relate to the "Edición conmemorativa" while the negative reviews correspond to the “Edición de Andrés Amorós”.Although the “Edición de Andrés Amorós” has many very helpful and interesting footnotes, it is replete with errata. When I've checked the many mistakes I've come across in the “Edición de Andrés Amorós”, I find that the "Edición conmemorativa" faithfully tracks the 1968 9th printing of "Rayuela" by the original publisher, Editorial Sudamericana (Buenos Aires), that I purchased in that same year. My support for this conclusion is based on another reviewer’s observation —namely, the January 12, 2013 review by Diyana included in this Review Section.In Diyana’s January 12, 2013 review of “Rayuela,” she correctly cites a glaring omission —shown here in capital letters— in the “Edición de Andrés Amorós” on page 196 of Chapter 16 where —halfway through the page— the sentence that starts with "Y de golpe, con una desapasionada perfección, Earl Hines proponía la primera variación de I ain't got nobody, y hasta Perico, perdido en una lectura remota, alzaba la cabeza (Y SE QUEDABA ESCUCHANDO, LA MAGA HABÍA AQUIETADO LA CABEZA) contre [sic] el muslo de Gregorovius . . . .” I have verified that this citation is to the “Edición de Andrés Amorós” because page 196 in the "Edición conmemorativa"is in Chapter 28 and the complete, unredacted sentence to which Diyana refers is on page 88 of Chapter 16 in the "Edición conmemorativa”. Moreover, this missing clause in Chapter 16, page 196 that Diyana points out is absent in both the 1984 1st “Edición de Andrés Amorós” and also in the 2010 21st edition and, therefore, cannot be for the "Edición conmemorativa" which I have reviewed here.Following are several other examples: Amorós / RAE & 1968 9ª EdiciónPage259: braqueta / bragueta393: cierizón / clerizón417: Dénmelo / Demelón (The transposition of the ‘n’ is intentional, not a mistake. A similar example of transposition in English: “A chittle bit lilly” for “A little bit chilly.”)458: culias / cuyas532 : pra / para619: la malo / lo malo(There are others, but several years ago I removed the Post-it page markers I had used to mark where they are.)Now, with that out of the way, following is my review of the "Edición conmemorativa" published by the Real Academia Española (Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial, SAU, 2019):“Rayuela" is one of my all-time favorite novels and Cortázar one of my all-time favorite authors. Over the years —beginning with my purchase in 1968 of the 9th edition of "Rayuela" printed in that year by its original publisher, Editorial Sudamericana (Buenos Aires)— I've re-read "Rayuela" in any number of ways including, reading it straight through from Chapter 1 to 56, 'hopscotching' my way through it according to the 'Tablero de dirección' suggested by the author, and meandering through it entirely at whim. It never fails to amaze and surprise me no matter how I read it! This "Edición conmemorativa" is a real gem with all its extra features like the facsimile of Cortázar's handwritten 'Cuaderno de bitácora' (with its transcription), the 'Glosario,' the 'Indice onomástico,' the 'Bibliografía,' and the essays by Gabriel García Márquez, Adolfo Bioy Casares, Mario Vargas Llosa, Carlos Fuentes, and Sergio Ramírez. It's a lotta book at a great price —in hardcover no less!— that does not disappoint! I highly recommend it.

The original language of this book is Spanish but the spanish used in this edition seems to be the result of a very bad translation either using something like google translate or another non sense software. Amazon, please take this edition out of your inventory. This is not fair for anybody wanted to read a beautiful book in Spanish like this. Quality control for this book did not exist.

There are two ways of reading this book and I have read it both ways. It's a postmodern novel, heavy on philosophy so not for everybody but I find it endlessly fascinating. I would recommend the Kindle edition because when it skips around the Kindle takes you there with a tap on the screen. Also, the book references many artists, writers, philosophers, places, etc., so it is nice to have the ease of going to Wikipedia. Plus you have the Spanish dictionary and the language translator. Without these conveniences it might not be my favorite book. Sounds like a project and it is but it is also a lot of fun when it isn't breaking your heart.

This novel's reputation places it possibly beyond criticism. It is a long complex ambitious book on every level... It will exhaust but fascinate at the same time. I chose the second hopscotch reading, but missing one or two of the links, my reading became disoriented, repetitive, and out of any synch. I later discovered I had missed some of the book's best passages. My fault of inattention I accept... With hindsight I would read the book straight through. Or even miss out on the rambling chapters where you feel you are trapped in a locked room with heavily smoking refugees from the philosophically aimless and rambling culture and habits of 1950's Paris. There is very much that seems excessive, indulgent, and aleatory. There is very much that is very good indeed.

Reading this book together with a friend, (she has a different version then mine, I have this one), I discovered that my book was missing parts of the sentences. AWFUL!!! I was very disappointed with this edition. If you look at the page 196 chapter 16, half way through the page, a sentence that starts with "Y de golpe, con una desapasionada perfección, Earl Hines proponía la primera variación de I ain't got nobody, y hasta Pericio perdido en una lectura remota, alzaba la cabeza (Y SE QUEDABA ESCUCHANDO, LA MAGA HABÍA AQUIETADO LA CABEZA) contra el muslo de Gregorovius...All that part that I wrote in capital letters is missing in this version of the book. This edition should be REEDITED and not sold like this. IT RUINS THIS AMAZING WORK OF Cortázar.

Aunque hubo algunas narraciones que disfruté, y algunos personajes que me interesaron, la verdad es que gran parte del libro lo leí sin comprender lo que decía o la razón por la que lo decía. Hay también varias secciones en francés (que no sé) y tuve que buscar mucho vocabulario que era desconocido para mí. En algún momentos me aburrió mucho y esperaba terminarlo pronto, después me intrigaba de nuevo. No me atrevo a decir que es un mal libro (me encuentro constantemente pensando en sus ideas después de leerlo) pero tampoco diría que me gustó. Creo que el autor se esforzó en hacerlo confuso y diferente, pero yo no pude seguirle el paso.

I did not like this book at all. At the time it was written, speaking French was considered sophisticated. The book has entire paragraphs in French that I was unable to understand.

Por el contenido:Rayuela es una magnífica novela, o antinovela, como se prefiera. Es una de las mayores travesuras literarias de la historia, y a la vez un tratado de literatura que debería mandar a la papelera multitud de otros manuales al uso. Podría alcanzar la categoría de libro de texto, por qué no, siempre y cuando el profesor aceptase el reto y estuviese a su altura.No es del todo cierto que haya varias maneras de leerlo. Si se quiere estar en la piel del autor, navegar por lo más sinuoso del particular Sena dibujado en su mente, o del agobiante rio de la Plata, hay que leerlo tal como nos propone Cortázar. Someterse a su juego. Lo demás son atajos, recovecos, aplazamientos de estudiante remolón... “Procrastinación lectora” en toda regla.Porque Cortázar nos hace detenernos donde quiere que nos detengamos, nos saca de la intrahistoria cuando la intrahistoria desea que salgamos de ella, nos anima al descanso cuando es necesario descansar, nos zarandea cuando hay que tomar aire, y además nos invita a recorrer esos otros lugares del mundo desgajado que le ha tocado en suerte relatar. Y encima, en muchas de las ocasiones, nos deja ahí abandonados, a nuestra propia suerte.Para vivir la antinovela que nos propone, y disfrutar de ella, debemos ser capaces de renunciar al relato lineal sin sobresaltos (es un decir, porque aun así cada capítulo sigue siendo un microcosmos) y adentrarnos en esa selva desestructurada que al principio nos aturde, nos descentra, pero a la que aprendemos a acostumbrarnos y por la que terminamos transitando con la seguridad y el desconcierto del caos “razonado”.El universo de Rayuela es ancho y a la vez enfermizamente pequeño, de barrio, de agobiante apartamento habitado por seres de una raza de intelectualidad endogámica que solo se justifican a sí mismos en función de las torturas mentales a las que se someten a base de coñac, jazz o tabaco negro sin filtro. Y mate.Pero tiene páginas tan brillantes, tan bien traídas y resueltas, que una sola de ellas merecería convertirse en temario de un máster en creación literaria.Y la belleza, la inmensa poesía convertida en lenguaje, o viceversa, la sublimación de lo cotidiano gracias a unas palabras encontradas o inventadas siempre con infinita y convincente maestría.La edición además es una maravilla. 600 páginas adicionales con estudios, comentarios, índices y algo que ojalá muchas de nuestras obras preferidas incluyesen: una transcripción del cuaderno de trabajo del autor, con el boceto de la estructura, de la trama, del día a día de la construcción de una novela como esta.Por el continente:Mal, muy mal la edición. Lo siento mucho. Un libro de 1200 páginas, que pretende ser una edición conmemorativa no puede racanear en algo tan simple como la anchura de las páginas. Un centímetro más, y la obra dejaría de ser un auténtico ladrillo de celulosa, para convertirse en un libro merecedor de los mejores estantes, y digno de una edición a cargo de la RAE.El tipo de letra, bien elegido y relativamente cómodo, se echa a perder cuando constatamos con horror que la tinta de la impresión se corre si la yema del dedo se apoya más de dos segundos sobre el mismo sitio. Si te da por subrayar en lápiz, y borrar… ¡cuidado! Se eliminarán también los caracteres impresos. Ni en las peores ediciones de mercadillo, oiga.No nos maltraten: Rayuela, además de por el contenido, es un libro difícil de leer porque su extensión obliga a una edición muy cuidada. Pero si superamos con devoción la asimilación de su contenido, el continente no debe ser motivo para añadirle dificultad.

Un texto clásico de la literatura latinoamericana en una bella edición, como es costumbre en las editadas por las academias de la lengua de Hispanoamérica (ojo, el crédito no es solo de la RAE sino del conjunto de Academias).Lo valioso de esta edición es la recuperación no solo de la portada original en pasta dura, sino que también incluye textos de monstruos literarios como Carlos Fuentes, Vargas Llosa y García Márquez.

Excellent book and excellent edition !

A masterpiece in Spanish language! Above all a lesson on Argentinian spirit and behaviour as well as human nature. Creativity as its most!

Mi comentario no es en si por el producto si no por el estado de la entrega. No había tenido problemas con ninguna entrega en cuanto al manejo del producto, me sorprendió esta vez sobre todo en temporada de la FIL y curiosamente no están teniendo mucho cuidado con ello. Me llegó un poco maltratado y sucio, no es como para regresarlo pero no estaría de más poner atención en el empaque y manejo de los mismos, si hubiera sido un regalo, no hubiera podido entregarlo así.
